Cheltenham vs Notts County Prediction: Cotterill’s magic to continue?

Cheltenham Town host Notts County on Monday Night (20:00, Sky Sports Main Event), looking to continue their strong form under new manager Steve Cotterill. The experienced boss returned to the club at the end of September and the Robins are unbeaten in the league since he came in, a run that has taken them out of the relegation zone.

Team News

Cotterill seems to have found his favoured team pretty early on during his Cheltenham reign and therefore we can expect a similar XI to the one that beat Bradford City in the FA Cup. Jonathan Tomkinson should play at left-back despite the return of George Harmon, while Arkell Jude-Boyd will play at right-back.

Ben Stevenson should play in midfield alongside star man Isaac Hutchinson, with Jake Bickerstaff set to lead the line once again. 

Notts County are likely to be without centre-back Rod McDonald who has missed the last two games through injury. However Matty Platt is back fit and could return here, having not started since August. 

Alasanna Jatta and Jodi Jones will be relied upon for goals and creativity respectively, as manager Martin Paterson looks to take his side into the play-off positions.

Cheltenham Town are the outsiders for this game at 3/1, while Notts County are 19/20 to take all three points. That gives the visitors an implied win probability of 51%, with a draw available at 5/2.

Over 2.5 goals is 10/11, BTTS is 4/5 and Matthew Dennis is the favourite to score first at 4/1. 

Cheltenham to win @ 3/1

These odds are just far too good to turn down in my eyes. You may see this game as 22nd vs eighth in League 2 and that would explain the odds-on price for Notts County, but that just doesn’t take into account the turnaround under Cotterill - who has a vast amount of experience under his belt. 

Cheltenham had been beaten 7-1 by Grimsby and were bottom of the league when he arrived, but since then they’ve picked up 10 points from four league matches, and beaten Bradford in the FA Cup. County are a good side that are unbeaten in their last four league games, but they lost to Man Utd’s U21s in midweek and were knocked out of the FA Cup on penalties by Brackley Town. Prior to that they beat Cambridge United 2-0 but only created an xG of 0.32 as Jatta struck twice late on. I think there’s big value on a home win tonight. 

Cheltenham Clean Sheet @ 10/3

Stopping Notts County from scoring is no easy feat, but given the Magpies failed to impress in front of goal in their last league outing from a chance creation perspective, I think a home win to nil is plausible. Cheltenham have kept three clean sheets in their last four games and this defence could carry them through to at least a point. 

A home win to nil is a massive 6/1.
