League Two has certainly lived up to the billing this season as new boys Notts County and Wrexham have made a splash at the top end of the division. 12 games in, I’ve taken a look at the promotion market and how things are shaping up in England’s fourth tier. 

Stockport County to get promoted at 2/5

Backing a 2/5 shot isn’t something I would usually recommend or tip, but Stockport are as much as a sure thing as you can get in football – hence the price. Dave Challinor has been exceptional as County boss, leading them up from the National League and now they boast one of, if not the strongest squad in League Two. 

They have had hefty investment and now with the likes of Nick Powell and Paddy Madden on the books, sit second in the league. They lost the play-off final on penalties last season, but there shouldn’t be any need for the play-offs this time around. After a slow start, they’ve now won six in a row – ain’t no stopping them now. 

Notts County to get promoted at 1/2

Hollywood Wrexham got all the attention after winning the National League last season, but it is fellow promoted side Notts County who have adjusted to life in League Two better. Luke Williams’ outfit currently sit top of the league and with a squad that is the envy of most of League Two. 

David McGoldrick, Jodi Jones and Macauley Langstaff are three of the outstanding players at this level, and they all play for the Magpies. It’s no surprise that they’ve scored 27 goals in the league, with most of their matches being thrilling encounters. They’ve got what it takes to secure a top-six finish this term. 

Salford City to get promoted at 10/1

Mansfield Town and Wrexham are the other two standout teams in the league, along with Stockport and Notts County. However, I’m looking elsewhere for some value given I’ve already picked two short prices. 

Crewe Alexandra have enjoyed a positive start to the season and sit at 14/1, the same price as Crawley Town who continue to defy the odds. However, the most sensible pick from where I am sitting is Salford City. They haven’t had the start many were expecting after missing out in the play-offs last term. 

However with Neil Wood at the helm, results have finally started to pick up and they’ve won their last three. Currently down in 13th, they need to continue their resurgence, but there is a long way to go for this talented squad. They should be able to get back amongst the play-off mix before the season is out. At 10/1, there’s a lot of value to be had.
