Luton town kenilworth road scaled

Luton Town climbed all the way up from the National League to the Premier League, but their rapid rise has been followed by a brutal descent. Double relegation has seen them back in the third tier, but they are now favourites to win League 1.

As well as the Hatters, below you can find the rest of the League 1 Winners Odds.

League 1 Winners Odds

  • Luton Town @ 3/1
  • Huddersfield Town @ 7/1
  • Cardiff City @ 8/1
  • Stockport County @ 8/1
  • Plymouth Argyle @ 10/1
  • Bar - 11/1

Luton Town @ 3/1

I have one big horse to back in this field, and one slightly smaller horse at better value. So let’s start with the big one. Luton shouldn’t be in this league, but they are. A second-year parachute payment team being in the third tier of English football is pretty baffling but things just culminated in a shock relegation last term.

The other teams at the bottom of the Championship were freakishly good towards the end of the campaign, and it just meant that the tide rose too high for the Hatters to stay afloat. They kept hold of Rob Edwards for too long, and Matt Bloomfield couldn’t save them, despite only Burnley and Leeds registering more points than them across the last 12 games.

They’ve lost Alfie Doughty, Thelo Aasgaard and Carlton Morris among others, but that doesn’t really matter. Their squad depth is still outrageous for the level, particularly at centre-back where the likes of £10m Premier League signing Mark McGuinness remain. Bloomfield had Wycombe Wanderers at the top of League 1 last term before jumping ship, and I’ll be absolutely staggered if Luton don’t lift the trophy in May. Bullish on this one - Luton to win League 1.

Huddersfield Town @ 7/1

New gaffer, new players, new feeling around Huddersfield Town. Lee Grant has come into the club that finished 10th last season and ended the campaign on a dreadful run of six losses in a row.

Grant takes his debut job but comes highly-rated from Ipswich Town so he could be a roaring success but it could also go the other way. The signings are impressive, with Owen Goodman, Alfie May, Jack Whatmough and Murray Wallace amongst several additons, but this upheaval may mean they are slow starters. They are certainly contenders for promotion and their ceiling is incredibly high, but I’m not banking on them securing an automatic spot, even with May guaranteeing 15+ goals a season.

Cardiff City @ 8/1

Cardiff came down in dismal fashion but have made a big change as Brian Barry-Murphy secured the managerial job. He is a gaffer I like from his brief spell at Rochdale, while he will have learnt a lot during his recent work at Manchester City.

I think again, they could fly this term, but I believe their squad remains some way behind the likes of Luton and Huddersfield. I’m excited by Rubin Colwill and Yousef Selach and they can certainly find themselves in the play-off picture, but I think it is asking a lot of this squad that suffered so much last season to win the title.

League 1 Winners Odds

Stockport County @ 8/1

Do you remember the little horse I was on about at the top of the piece? Well, it comes in the form of Stockport County. Given they lost in the play-offs on penalties last term, they aren’t My Little Pony, but winning the title would still be a seismic achievement.

Dave Challinor is a manager who loves achieving promotion and unlike Cardiff and Huddersfield he won’t need any time to settle in at his club. Corey Addai is a top goalkeeper, Oli Norwood is a class act in midfield and Malik Mothersille comes in to provide goals up top.

They need to try and avoid the play-offs this time around and I think they are well-set to finish in the top two and potentially challenge Luton at a big price. They have all the attributes to get promoted this season and unlike some of the other candidates - we know exactly what we are going to get from them. I’m backing a Hatters top two this season in League 1, with Stockport likely to finish second, but if Luton’s relegation hangover lingers - they could win the lot.

Plymouth Argyle @ 10/1

Another relegated side from the Championship, but I can’t back Plymouth Argyle to win the league at this moment in time. Miron Muslic walked out the door this summer, and two key players from last season Ryan Hardie and Mustaphu Bundu have also departed.

Although I think Tom Cleverley is a good replacement for Muslic, I think they’ve lost too much to challenge for the title. Bundu and Hardie were massive for them last season and although they were relegated because they left Wayne Rooney in charge for too long - it’s hard to see them breaking the top two - with the play-offs a likely outcome for Cleverley and Co.
