With Sevilla in La Liga's relegation zone heading into May, there are just five games left for the seven-time Europa League winners to save themselves. The first of those sees them welcome Real Sociedad to the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán on Monday night.
Having been on a clear downward trajectory since their most recent European triumph in 2023, Sevilla's current plight is not entirely unexpected. They finished 17th last season, just one point clear of relegated Leganés.
A summer window that saw star players Dodi Lukébakio and Loïc Badé depart added to the sense that another relegation battle was looming. However, those concerns were eased by a promising start to life under Matías Almeyda. That included a stunning 4-1 home victory over Barcelona back in October.
That day must now feel like an eternity ago for followers of Los Nervionenses. There have been just five wins and 14 defeats in La Liga for Sevilla since then. Almeyda's reign ended in March, with Luis García Plaza tasked with overseeing the final nine fixtures.
With four down, the experienced Spaniard has already had to face questions about his own position. The former Alavés and Mallorca boss largely laughed those off, and his only home game to date did end in a 2-1 victory over a much-changed Atlético Madrid team. However, road defeats against Oviedo, Levante and Osasuna have quickly ended any chance of the new man enjoying a honeymoon period.
The mood in the Real Sociedad camp will be an altogether different one. They too faced the prospect of getting dragged into an unlikely relegation scrap earlier in the campaign. However, just about everything has gone right since the club made the bold move to make Pellegrino Matarazzo La Liga's first American coach at the turn of the year.
Almost instantly, the Basque side looked a much more impressive outfit under new management. They've lost just four of their 21 matches since the change. La Real have climbed well clear of the relegation battle, while embarking on a glorious run in the Copa del Rey, which ended in a penalty shootout victory over Atlético Madrid in the final last month.
They've also been a really good watch under the new regime. Three of Real Sociedad's previous nine league games have ended in 3-3 draws. That includes a thrilling clash away to Rayo Vallecano last weekend, when they let a two-goal lead slip in the closing stages.
Mikel Oyarzabal bagged a brace in that match to continue his impressive form. The Spain international looks set to head into the World Cup on a real high, having netted 25 times already this term for club and country.

Team News:
A suspension for midfielder Djibril Sow means Sevilla will need to make at least one change to the side that lost 2-1 at Osasuna last Sunday. January signing Neal Maupay netted their goal in that game, and may continue up top.
Marcão and Manu Bueno are the only likely injury absentees for García. He'll be looking for Rubén Vargas to provide some attacking inspiration, with the winger one of the home team's few convincing options in the final third.
Real Sociedad are missing Igor Zubeldia due to injury, so Jon Martín and Duje Ćaleta-Car will continue in central defence. They also still have a fitness concern over Gonçalo Guedes.
With Europa League qualification already assured by virtue of Real Sociedad's cup win, Matarazzo opted for some experimentation with his system in Vallecas last time out. Oyarzabal was deployed just off striker Orri Óskarsson, who was also on target. That approach may continue at the Sánchez-Pizjuán.
Sevilla vs Real Sociedad Predicted Lineups
- Sevilla: Vlachodimos, Carmona, Castrin, Salas, Suazo, Sanchez, Gudelj, Agoume, Vargas, Romero, Maupay
- Real Sociedad: Remiro, Aramburu, Martin, Caleta-Car, Gomez, Kubo, Turrientes, Soler, Barrenetxea, Oskarsson, Oyarzabal
Match Odds:
Perhaps surprisingly given their poor form, Sevilla head into the game as the 11/8 favourites. You can back the Draw at 12/5, while Real Sociedad are priced at 15/8 to leave with all the points.
If you fancy the home team's chances, García's men are available at 5/4 to score over 1.5 goals. They are also on offer at 12/5 to score in both halves against what can be a vulnerable Real Sociedad defence.
The visitors are priced at 10/11 to win either half. They're also on offer at 4/1 to win a game that sees both teams score, while you can back La Real with a -1.00 Handicap at 5/1.
Sevilla's Nigerian striker Akor Adams is the 4/1 favourite to score first, although he may face competition for a starting role from Isaac Romero, who is priced at 5/1 to open the scoring. Maupay is given a 13/2 chance of netting first, while he's on offer at 23/10 to score anytime.
Oyarzabal is the dangerman for the visitors. He's available at 13/10 to score or assist in this clash, while you can back Óskarsson to score anytime at 15/8.

Sevilla vs Real Sociedad Stats
- Sevilla's recent form through their past five matches is L L W L L
- Real Sociedad's recent form through their past five matches is L W D L D
- Only Getafe (101) and Rayo Vallecano (96) have been shown more yellow cards than Sevilla (95) in La Liga this season.
- Real Sociedad's keeper(s) have the worst save percentage in La Liga at just 64.4%.
- Both teams have very low Clean Sheet records (15.2% and 9.1% respectively).
Bet 1 - Real Sociedad to have over 11.5 shots @ Evens
It's getting to that time in the season when some Spanish sides are described as being on the beach. With some silverware in the bag, Real Sociedad aren't far off that point, but they do still have a very slim chance of qualifying for the Champions League, although much will depend on events in Europe this coming week as Spain seeks a fifth place in next season's competition.
In any case, that should ensure they are up for this encounter, and they had 13 shots in an entertaining draw at Rayo in their previous outing. Their average of 12.6 shots per away match is also the fifth-highest figure in La Liga.
Up against a Sevilla side that has lost five of their previous six games, and hasn't really got going under their new coach, Real Sociedad should regularly threaten. I'm backing them to have over 11.5 shots at even-money
Bet 2 - Over 2.5 goals & Both teams to score @ 13/10
La Liga's Monday night games have rarely delivered on the entertainment front this term, with the last three all ending with 0-0 or 1-0 scorelines. However, this match looks likely to buck the trend and serve up a fair bit of action.
That's mostly down to Real Sociedad's attacking approach. They've only failed to score once in 21 matches since Matarazzo's appointment, and that was against a defensive Getafe side, when they were nursing a few Copa del Rey final hangovers. 76% of their games under the American have seen both teams score.
Anything less than a win would leave Sevilla still in the bottom three, so the hosts also have every reason to chase maximum points. I'm therefore expecting a decent contest, and I'm backing Over 2.5 goals and Both teams to score at 13/10
