Real Madrid travel to the Estadio Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan to take on a resurgent Sevilla side this Sunday (18:00 BST, Premier Sports 1). The Andalusians were in the relegation zone less than a fortnight ago. However, after three straight wins, they remarkably now have an outside chance of competing for a place in Europe.

There are only two matches left to go in what has turned into a chaotic and pretty miserable season for everyone connected with Real Madrid. The appointment of Xabi Alonso last summer was designed to spark something of a cultural change at the club. The ex-Bayer Leverkusen boss was seen as the modern-day tactician who would lead Los Blancos into a new era.

However, one year on, player power seemingly still reigns supreme at the Santiago Bernabéu. After sections of the dressing room turned against Alonso, few players have stepped up and delivered for his successor Álvaro Arbeloa, who never felt like much more than an interim appointment.

Real Madrid look set to go back to the future by appointing José Mourinho as their new coach, with talks reportedly entering their final stages.

Since losing El Clásico 2-0 to Barcelona last weekend, the main news to come out of Real Madrid surrounded a bizarre press conference from club president Florentino Pérez. The 79-year-old rarely speaks publicly, but took the opportunity to unleash a Trumpian rant against all and sundry, with various media organisations, La Liga and rival clubs accused of conspiring against Real Madrid.

That largely overshadowed a 2-0 home victory over already-relegated Real Oviedo on Thursday night. The main talking point from another unconvincing display was Kylian Mbappé being introduced to widespread jeers in the 68th minute.

Sevilla will certainly be hoping to benefit from playing against what is clearly a divided Real Madrid side, as well as one that is not competing for anything. The Andalusians do have plenty of reason to be up for this match. They are in the extraordinary situation of heading into their final two fixtures not mathematically safe from relegation, but also not out of European contention.

It has been quite a turnaround over the past two weeks. Just four games into his reign, Luis García Plaza was already feeling the heat with Sevilla in the bottom three ahead of their clash against Real Sociedad on matchday 34. Veteran Alexis Sánchez came off the bench to net the only goal in that match, as a noisy Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán celebrated a much-needed victory.

The outlook was bleak again for Sevilla when they were trailing fellow strugglers Espanyol 1-0 with only 10 minutes to go last Saturday. However, they dug deep and won that game thanks to fine late goals from Andrés Castrín and Akor Adams.

García’s side then all but sealed their survival by coming from 2-0 down to win 3-2 away to Villarreal in midweek, with Adams again netting the winner.

Team News

Sevilla are missing Marcão and Manu Bueno again due to injuries, but they have no fresh selection issues following on from their impressive victory at the Estadio de la Cerámica.

García may still decide some fresh legs are needed. Castrín and Juanlu Sánchez are among the players he could turn to, while Alexis may be deployed in the second half once more.

Real Madrid will be without the injured quartet of Éder Militão, Rodrygo, Arda Güler and Ferland Mendy. Fede Valverde has recovered from a head injury sustained in his recent clash with teammate Aurélien Tchouaméni, and could be involved.

The fit-again Mbappé may come in for his first start since the draw at Betis over three weeks ago. Arbeloa could rotate in other positions, with Jude Bellingham also likely to return after scoring following his introduction as a substitute against Oviedo.

Sevilla vs Real Madrid Predicted Lineups

  • Sevilla: Vlachodimos; J. Sanchez, Castrin, Salas, Suazo; Vargas, Agoume, Gudelj, Oso; Maupay, Adams
  • Real Madrid: Courtois; Alexander-Arnold, Asencio, Rudiger, F. Garcia; Diaz, Camavinga, Tchouameni, Bellingham; Mbappe, Vinicius Jr.

Sevilla vs Real Madrid Odds

Real Madrid are the 6/5 favourites to win this match, while you can back the Draw at 5/2. Sevilla are priced at 21/10 to record a fourth straight victory.

You can also back the hosts to win either half at 19/20. They’re given a 6/4 chance of scoring over 1.5 goals, while the Andalusians are on offer at 6/5 to score first.

Real Madrid are given a 3/1 chance of winning the game to nil. You can back Arbeloa’s side to score in both halves at 11/4. They’re also on offer at 13/8 to be leading at the interval.

Despite the current backlash against him, Mbappé has netted 41 goals for his club this season in all competitions. The Frenchman is priced at 11/4 to score first here, while he’s available at 5/6 to score anytime.

Alternative options in the Anytime Goalscorer market include Bellingham at 11/4, Adams at 7/5, and Neal Maupay at 12/5.

  • Adams (SEV) has scored in three of his last five apps

Sevilla to win @ 21/10

Real Madrid are a club in crisis and there was nothing about their performance on Thursday night that pointed towards a positive reaction to the many off-field issues. They created only two big chances, which was as many as rock-bottom Real Oviedo.

It’ll be tougher on Sunday against a motivated Sevilla side that is suddenly playing with belief again. With a big crowd behind them in warm conditions, they are likely to outrun a Real Madrid outfit that will surely just want this season to finish.

Despite their overall struggles, Sevilla have already beaten both Barcelona and Atlético Madrid at home in La Liga this term. Fresh from a road win against third-placed Villarreal, I’m backing them to claim another scalp and win this game at 21/10.

Bet Builder - Both teams to score & Akor Adams 1+ shots on target @ 20/21

Even when they fail to function well as a team, Real Madrid normally have enough individual quality on the pitch to get on the scoresheet. They’ve only failed to score twice in 29 matches since the turn of the year. However, it’s also just two clean sheets in 12 fixtures for Arbeloa’s side.

García deserves credit for restoring some belief to this Sevilla side. They have the ninth best goalscoring record in La Liga this term, with an average of 1.28 goals per game, and Adams is frequently their main threat. The Nigerian has scored 10 times in the Spanish top flight, despite only making 20 starts. He’s averaging 1.9 shots per game and has netted in three of his past five appearances.

Given that, I’m using the Bet Builder to back both teams to score and Adams to have 1+ shots on target at 20/21.
