Match Preview:

The Monday night football in Spain comes from the Estadio Manuel Martínez Valero. Elche have been the pick of the promoted teams in La Liga this season, and they'll fancy their chances at home to an unconvincing Sevilla side.

Playing a possession-based style of football, Elche have claimed many scalps already on their return to the top flight. They'd not lost a single home game until Villarreal picked up three points on this ground earlier this month.

Since then, Eder Sarabia's side have drawn 1-1 away to Valencia, before exiting the Copa del Rey with a 2-1 midweek defeat against Real Betis. They currently sit comfortably in mid-table, but in a congested league, it would only take a poor run of form for them to slip towards trouble.

That reality should ensure Sarabia and his team do not get too carried away, despite the impressive way they've managed to adapt to playing at the highest level in Spain. Los Franjiverdes are currently hampered by a few injuries, but this is very much a team effort, rather than a side reliant on any one individual.

The Elche boss clearly believes in healthy competition across the pitch, with even goalkeepers Iñaki Peña and Matías Dituro rotating in and out. Midfielder Aleix Febas has perhaps been the pick of the bunch for the home team so far this term, and they're sure to look to get the 29-year-old on the ball as much as possible in this match.

For evidence of how quickly fortunes can turn around in this league, Elche only need to look at their opponents. Sevilla were riding high and dreaming of a European push when they thumped Barcelona 4-1 back in early October. However, they've picked up just seven points from 11 matches since then.

With a number of struggling teams already getting good results this weekend, Sevilla are now hovering dangerously just above the relegation zone. They've lost their last four matches in all competitions to nil, with the pressure building on Matías Almeyda.

Defeat here could raise the possibility of another managerial change, at a club where coaches don't tend to last very long. Almeyda is the seventh man to take charge of Sevilla since the departure of Julen Lopetegui in October 2022. It would be to the surprise of nobody if the Andalusians were to make another alteration in a bid to salvage another season.

However, it's the boardroom where much of the fan anger is directed. The club has been mismanaged over the past few years, and a precarious financial position has seen key players continue to depart, with little room for manoeuvre in terms of bringing quality in.

This current squad is made up of a mixture of young academy products like José Ángel Carmona and Kike Salas, as well as veterans that are many years past their respective peaks such as César Azpilicueta and Alexis Sánchez. While there were a few encouraging results earlier in the season, it hasn't proven to be a recipe for success.

Team News:

Elche do appear to have a relatively deep squad for a recently promoted club, but that will be tested to the maximum over the next few weeks as a result of various injuries. They are set to be without Pedro Bigas, Rafa Mir, Álvaro Núñez, Héctor Fort, and John Donald on Monday night.

With André Silva also only just getting back towards fitness, Sarabia's attacking options are limited. Former Real Madrid youngster Álvaro Rodríguez is expected to lead the line.

As for Sevilla, they're missing experienced centre-back Marcão to suspension again. Azpilicueta and Alexis are among four injury absentees, with Rubén Vargas and Alfon González also sidelined.

Those issues suggest major changes are unlikely from the side that suffered a late 1-0 home defeat against Celta Vigo last weekend. Gabriel Suazo is fit again, though. He could push for a starting role on the left flank, ahead of youngster Oso.

Elche vs Sevilla Predicted Lineups

  • Elche: Pena, Chust, Affengruber, Petrot, Nunez, Neto, Febas, Aguado, Valera, Diangana, Rodriguez
  • Sevilla: Vlachodimos, Carmona, Gudelj, Salas, Sanchez, Agoume, Mendy, Oso, Sow, Romero, Fernandez

Match Odds:

Elche are the 5/4 favourites to win, while you can back the Draw at 11/5. Sevilla are available at 23/10 to claim what would be a priceless three points as they bid to avert their current slide.

With only one defeat in 10 home outings so far, you can back Elche to win, Both teams to score and 10+ corners at boosted odds of 15/2. Alternatively, the hosts are on offer at enhanced odds of 11/4 to win the game to nil.

Sevilla are priced at 2/1 to score over 1.5 goals in the match, while you can back the visitors to win either half at 21/20.

Given the home team's other selection issues up front, Álvaro looks the player most likely to get on the scoresheet in this match. The 21-year-old is priced at 9/2 to score first, and 9/5 to score anytime.

Alternative options in the anytime goalscorer market include Germán Valera, who has scored three times for Elche so far this term. He's available at 11/4, while you can back Sevilla striker Isaac Romero to get on the scoresheet at 21/10.

Elche vs Sevilla Stats

  • Sevilla (62) have had more yellow cards than anyone else in La Liga.
  • The visitors' have had seven penalties awarded, the joint-most in the league.
  • Elche's goalkeepers have had 1,000 passes, which is 409 more than the next most in Spain's top flight.

Bet 1 - Both teams to score - No @ 10/11

These sides shared four goals when they met earlier in the season, but both teams were in better shape in the final third at that stage. It's hard to see where the goals are going to come from on Monday.

Mir is a major absentee for Elche, with his six-goal return in La Liga the highest among these two teams. No Sevilla player has netted more than three times in the Spanish top flight this term, and more than a month has passed since anyone scored for Los Nervionenses.

Given that, there's good reason to think at least one of these sides will fire blanks, and I'm backing Both teams to score - No at 10/11.

Bet 2 - Sevilla -10.0 Booking points @ 6/4

There'll be a real contrast in styles on evidence in this game. Sarabia's Barça-inspired approach will see them dominate the ball for long periods, and a more physical Sevilla side will look to disrupt that as much as they can.

The visitors have got the worst disciplinary record in La Liga this term, with 11 more yellow cards than any other team. By contrast, only Barcelona have picked up fewer yellows than Elche.

Given that, I fancy the card count to be largely the result of fouls by the away team, and I'm backing Sevilla -10.0 Booking points at 6/4.
