Elche CF vs FC Barcelona Preview:
Barcelona travel to Elche on Saturday for their latest match in what's shaping up to be a very tight race for the Spanish title. Hansi Flick's side are only a point clear of Real Madrid heading into this weekend.
Despite their many issues, Los Blancos are currently on course for a 92-point season in La Liga. That's more than Barça collected in their 2024/25 title win and highlights how the Catalans have little margin for error, despite performing to a much higher level than their eternal rivals again for most of this season.
A 2-1 defeat at Real Sociedad earlier this month was the first setback for the Blaugrana in the league since their defeat in El Clásico way back in October. In truth, they should have won at the Reale Arena, having created a host of clear chances throughout the 90 minutes.
The response to that defeat has been positive, although it has taken a while for Barça to get into their groove in their last three matches. They weren't anywhere near their best for 45 minutes at home to bottom club Real Oviedo last weekend, but ultimately capitalised on some mistakes to win 3-0, with all the goals coming after the interval.
It was a similar story in midweek, when FC Copenhagen took a surprise 1-0 lead into the break at Camp Nou in the Champions League. Needing to win to book their round-of-16 ticket, the reigning Spanish champions rattled in four second-half goals to climb all the way up to fifth in the standings.
They'll be expecting a tricky game at the Estadio Manuel Martínez Valero on Saturday. Elche competed well in a 3-1 defeat in the reverse fixture in November. The promoted club had 51% of the ball in that game, with their possession-based style in full evidence even against such strong opposition.
Led by former Barcelona assistant coach Eder Sarabia, Los Franjiverdes have been comfortably the most impressive of the promoted clubs in La Liga so far this term. However, they did lose to one of the others last weekend.
Trailing 2-1 away to Levante heading into stoppage time, Elche's 20-year-old substitute Adam Boayar popped up with an extraordinary overhead kick to level the game. However, there was still time for more late drama, with Alan Matturro heading in a 96th-minute winner for the hosts.
That could prove a significant result if Elche's current four-game winless streak extends deeper into 2026. The bottom half of La Liga is extremely tight, and a winless away record suggests Sarabia's men could yet get sucked into the relegation dogfight.
It has been a different story at home, with Villarreal the only visiting team to have won at the Martínez Valero so far this term. Real Madrid needed two late goals to salvage a point when they visited in November, and everything points to another competitive clash on Saturday night when the current leaders come calling.
Team News:
Elche's chances in this game are hampered by the suspension of Aleix Febas. The midfielder has arguably been their most important player, and was outstanding in the recent draw against Real Madrid.
Héctor Fort is an injury absentee against his parent club, while Sarabia will also need to make do without Álvaro Núñez and Josan Ferrández. Top scorer Rafa Mir is an additional doubt, with Álvaro Rodríguez expected to lead the line for the hosts.
Barcelona made it through their midweek engagement without picking up any injuries. However, they'll still be missing Pedri, Gavi and Andreas Christensen here.
Some light rotation is likely from Flick, with Frenkie de Jong one player who looks sure to return after serving a ban in the Champions League. Ferran Torres is also pushing for a recall up front, while we may see either Marc Bernal or Marc Casadó come into the midfield.
Elche CF vs FC Barcelona Lineups (Predicted)
- Elche CF: Pena, Chust, Affengruber, Bigas, Pedrosa, Neto, Diangana, Aguado, Valera, Rodriguez, Silva
- FC Barcelona: J. Garcia, Kounde, Cubarsi, Martin, Balde, E. Garcia, De Jong, Yamal, Fermin, Raphinha, F. Torres
Match Odds:
Barcelona are the 1/3 favourites to collect another three points on Saturday night. Elche are on offer at 7/1, while you can back the Draw at 9/2.
If you're expecting the hosts to build on a really strong season in front of their own fans, Elche or Draw may appeal at 11/5 in the Double Chance market. You can also back Both teams to score at 4/7, while the hosts are priced at 9/4 to score over 1.5 goals.
Alternatively, you can back Barcelona to win to nil at 6/4. That has been a winning bet in four of the Catalan club's last five league games. The visitors are also on offer at 5/6 to score over 2.5 goals.
It's unclear who will be the striker for the visitors, with Ferran and Robert Lewandowski competing with one another, but Raphinha and Lamine Yamal look likely to start out wide. You can back those players in the Anytime Goalscorer market at odds of 5/6 and 1/1, respectively.
For the hosts, Álvaro is on offer 12/5 to score at some point, while you can back André Silva to grab a goal at odds of 23/10.

Elche CF vs FC Barcelona Stats
- Barcelona (158) have had exactly double Elche's (79) Shots on Target so far this season.
- Only Villarreal (0.39) have a better Goals per Shot on Target number than Elche (0.35).
- Roony Bardghji has the best Shot on Target % of any La Liga player with more than ten shots (69.2%)
Bet 1 - First-half double chance - Elche or Draw @ 1/1
There is a clear trend at the moment with Barcelona failing to produce their best football until the second half. They've not been in front at the break in any of their last six matches, since thrashing Athletic Club in the semi-finals of the Spanish Supercopa.
While Flick would have been hoping for his team to take control of matches earlier on, that pattern can perhaps be explained by a need to conserve energy during a very busy period. Barça are so good at wearing their opponents down, and ultimately capitalising on the gaps that appear.
With Saturday's opposition having only conceded four times before the break all season at home, I'm backing Elche or Draw in the First-half Double Chance market at odds of 1/1.
Bet 2 - Elche +3.0 Handicap & Elche to have over 8.5 shots @ 6/4 via Bet Builder
Elche had nine attempts when these sides last met in November, and launched several effective attacks that exposed Barcelona's high line. I can see them having some joy again here, and they should be the fresher of the two teams given the away side's recent continental commitments.
Pedri is also a very significant absentee for the visitors, which points to Los Franjiverdes again having plenty of the ball in this latest meeting.
The hosts are yet to be beaten by more than two goals on their return to the top flight, while Barça haven't won by that margin on the road since the opening day against the nine men of Mallorca. Given that, I'm using the Bet Builder to back Elche +3.0 Handicap and Elche to have over 8.5 shots at 6/4.
