With 10 points separating the sides, the two are not directly fighting for positions, with Real Madrid the only team that has a serious shot at denying Barça back-to-back Spanish titles. The visitors are more focused on getting over the line and securing Champions League qualification for the second season in a row.

It has been a mixed fortnight for Hansi Flick’s side. Their hopes of securing another domestic trophy clean sweep were hit hard by a heavy 4-0 defeat to Atlético Madrid in the first leg of their Copa del Rey semi-final. A Catalan derby loss against Girona a few days later also saw them displaced by Los Blancos, who took top spot in La Liga.

However, the two giants of Spanish football swiftly swapped positions again, with Real Madrid losing 2-1 at Osasuna last weekend, while Barça bounced back with a 3-0 home victory over Levante.

The debate surrounding Flick’s high line continues to rage. Even against lowly opposition, they were twice caught out in the early stages a week ago, with Levante missing two clear one-on-one opportunities. Critics of the approach argue that it is unsustainable and likely to be the undoing of the Catalan club when they face elite opposition in the knockout stages of the Champions League.

Those in favour point to the four trophies that Barça have already won with Flick at the helm. An 80% win ratio and an average of 2.68 goals per game would also suggest their high-risk approach is still delivering in La Liga this term.

In some regards, Villarreal are a team that should be well equipped when it comes to countering the league leaders’ style of play. They are a counter-attacking team that has the pace to break quickly on the flanks and through the middle, with Marcelino blessed with a number of good options in both departments.

Summer signings Alberto Moleiro and Georges Mikautadze have impressed, with a combined total of 17 league goals. Meanwhile, the rapid Nicolas Pépé could have a major role to play in this game, and the visiting boss may consider using him as a striker rather than a winger.

January was a disappointing month for the Yellow Submarine as their dismal Champions League campaign ended with losses against Ajax and Bayer Leverkusen. They finished 35th out of 36 teams in the league phase of that competition, while defeats to Real Betis and Real Madrid in the league in early 2026 further highlighted their flaws when up against stronger opponents.

With no more cup distractions, Villarreal have bounced back well in February, winning three of their last four La Liga fixtures. They weren’t entirely convincing last time out, but goals from Santi Comesaña and Pape Gueye were enough to secure a 2-1 derby victory over regional rivals Valencia.

Barcelona vs Villarreal Odds

Villarreal have won on three of their last four league visits to Barcelona and they’re priced at 7/1 to repeat that feat on Saturday. The hosts are the 2/7 favourites, while the Draw is priced at 5/1.

If you’re expecting Barcelona’s attack to fire, you can back the home team to score over 2.5 goals at 4/6. They are also on offer at 13/8 to win the game to nil, while you can back Flick’s men to win both halves at 7/5.

Alternatively, Villarreal are on offer at 12/5 to win either half. The away team are given a 9/4 chance of scoring over 1.5 goals in the game, while you can back Both teams to score two or more goals at 3/1.

It’s unclear whether Robert Lewandowski or Ferran Torres will get the nod up top for Barça, but there’s little doubt about who will play on the flanks. Raphinha is priced at 7/2 to score first, while you can back the Brazilian to score anytime at 8/11. Meanwhile, Lamine Yamal is on offer at 4/1 to score first, and 5/6 to score anytime.

From a visiting perspective, you can back Moleiro to score anytime at 13/5. Mikautadze is priced at 21/10 in the same market.

Team News

The other big positive last weekend from a Barcelona perspective was the return of Pedri, following injury. He featured off the bench against Levante, and is likely to come into the starting lineup here, particularly given Frenkie de Jong is set for several weeks on the sidelines as a result of a hamstring issue.

Long-term absentees Andreas Christensen and Gavi are the only other fitness concerns for Flick. Gerard Martín is suspended for this game, while January signing João Cancelo is making a strong case for a starting role ahead of Alejandro Balde at left-back, with the Portuguese international impressing last time out.

Villarreal are missing defenders Logan Costa, Juan Foyth and Willy Kambwala to long-term injuries. Forward Gerard Moreno and winger Pau Cabanes are also sidelined.

Alfonso Pedraza and Tajon Buchanan are the players most likely to be introduced into the starting lineup, but Marcelino does have the option of naming the same team that won last Sunday.

Barcelona to win & under 3.5 goals @ 15/8

Villarreal’s victory in this fixture last season came after their opponents had already clinched the title, and there’s reason to think they won’t have as much joy in attack this time around.

Marcelino’s side have flattered to deceive in the big matches all season. They lost seven out of eight in the Champions League, while they’ve taken just one point from five outings against fellow top-five opponents in La Liga. The Yellow Submarine have already suffered 2-0 defeats against each of Spain’s “big three”, with goals from Raphinha and Yamal sealing a Barça victory at the Estadio de la Cerámica in December.

With Barcelona still boasting a 100% record at home in the league this term, I’m backing the hosts to win and under 3.5 goals at odds of 15/8.

Bet Builder - Villarreal to score under 1.5 goals & Barcelona to win the second half @ 1/1

Despite the issues their high defensive line has caused at times, no team has been able to take full advantage when they’ve visited Camp Nou. Barça have won nine out of nine at home in all competitions since they returned to their renovated stadium in November, and they’ve conceded just four goals across that period.

Incredibly, Flick’s side are yet to let in a single second-half goal at home in La Liga this term. They’ve scored 22 times after the interval in front of their own fans.

Given that and how poor Villarreal have been against the better teams in Spain and beyond, I’m using the Bet Builder to back Villarreal to score under 1.5 goals and Second half - Barcelona at 1/1.
