The first of those aforementioned three clashes is by far the least important from a home perspective, but this game really matters for the visitors as they bid to hold off Real Madrid in the Spanish title race.

For Diego Simeone and Los Rojiblancos, the upcoming Champions League quarter-final will be the priority. They also have a Copa del Rey final against Real Sociedad to look forward to in two weeks, so any players who aren’t 100% fit won’t be risked in this match.

It has been a disappointing league season for Atleti. They trail this weekend’s opponents by 16 points with nine games to play. However, there is absolutely no prospect of them missing out on a top-four finish, so there is little riding on their remaining La Liga fixtures.

Simeone has been rotating his team and resting players in the league for the best part of two months already. That contributed to an embarrassing 3-0 defeat against neighbours Rayo Vallecano in February. Goalkeeper Jan Oblak publicly called out his teammates following that performance, and they have shown a bit more in recent outings in the Spanish top flight.

Atleti reeled off four straight league victories following the Rayo defeat, and they do have the squad depth needed to rotate and win. That run ended with a 3-2 derby defeat against Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu last time out.

Those of a conspiratorial mindset might suggest that was actually the best outcome for Atletico Madrid. Had they won that game, Barcelona’s lead at the top of La Liga would have grown to seven points, and they may well have been in a position to rest players in the league around the upcoming Champions League quarter-final between the clubs.

As it stands, that’s not really an option for Hansi Flick, with his side targeting back-to-back league titles as well as European glory. Barcelona secured Champions League progress via a 7-2 blitz against Newcastle just before the international break.

When it clicks, they are perhaps the most devastating attacking force in European football. Barca have also won each of their last five league games, but those results alone do not mask one or two flaws, which will be of concern to the German heading into the business end of the season.

The Catalans were no better than the Magpies until the second half of the second leg in their Champions League round-of-16 tie. They’ve also looked lethargic in two of their last three outings in La Liga, and were somewhat fortunate to seal 1-0 wins against Athletic Club and Rayo Vallecano. Their opponents created more xG and more big chances in each of those games.

There was also really bad news during the international break for Barcelona, with Raphinha picking up another injury on duty with Brazil. Club president Joan Laporta has launched an angry rant against Fifa and is claiming compensation, with the winger set to miss at least a month.

That could be a huge problem for Barca, given three of their four league defeats this term have come without Raphinha. The ex-Leeds man plays a key role not only in terms of his attacking threat, but also in leading the press with his high energy levels.

Atletico Madrid vs Barcelona Odds

Atletico Madrid are priced at 2/1 to claim what would already be their second home win against Barcelona in 2026, while you can back the Draw at 11/4. The visitors are given a 23/20 chance of avenging their recent 4-0 Copa del Rey defeat on this ground by claiming an important three points.

If you fancy the hosts to cause problems for Flick’s men again, Atleti are priced at 1/1 to score over 1.5 goals. You can also back Both teams to score at 2/5, while Both teams to score two or more goals is on offer at 5/2.

The Catalans are given a 5/1 chance of winning both halves, while they are priced at 11/4 with a -1.00 Handicap. Barcelona to win and Over 2.5 goals is on offer at 7/4.

Lewandowski and Alexander Sørloth are the two favourites in the Goalscorer markets. Both strikers are available at 9/2 to score first, and 5/4 to score anytime.

You can also back Rashford to seize the opportunity that should come his way by scoring anytime at 7/4. Meanwhile, Lamine Yamal is priced at 6/4 to score at some stage, and 5/2 to assist a goal.

Team News

All eyes will be on the Atletico Madrid teamsheet on Saturday evening. Simeone could opt to simply rest all of the players he intends to start in midweek, but he’s more likely to field a mixture of regulars and squad players.

Marcos Llorente and Johnny Cardoso are definite absentees due to suspensions. With Rodri Mendoza and Pablo Barrios both injury doubts, that leaves the Atleti boss short on options in midfield. Defensive regular Marc Pubill is also a fitness concern and is unlikely to be risked, while Juan Musso may be preferred to Oblak in goal, with the latter only just returning from injury.

As for Barcelona, Flick will go strong, but he has a couple of big calls to make. Marcus Rashford is the obvious replacement for the injured Raphinha, but Dani Olmo could also be deployed on the left flank.

The other major decision will be up front, where an out-of-form Ferran Torres and a potentially fatigued Robert Lewandowski are the options. The latter clocked up 180 minutes for Poland in the World Cup play-offs during the international break.

Andreas Christensen and Frenkie de Jong are also still sidelined. Jules Kounde and Alejandro Balde are available again, and may feature off the bench following their recent injuries

Barcelona to win @ 23/20

It’s difficult to look past the unique circumstances of this fixture, with the clubs meeting in a huge Champions League tie over the next two weeks. Barcelona will clearly be the more motivated side on Saturday night, while the result will have virtually no impact on Atletico Madrid’s season, which will now be defined by how they perform in the cups.

There is also no getting away from the fact that Raphinha will be a major miss for the Catalans. However, his absence may be felt more severely a few games down the line. Fresh from a much-needed break, the visitors should be sharper here than was the case against Rayo a fortnight ago, and they ought to be able to get by without the Brazilian on this occasion.

Barca are on a five-game winning streak in La Liga, while they’ve also triumphed on four of their last five trips to the Estadio Metropolitano. They look good at 23/20 to win this match too.

Bet Builder - Barcelona over 11.5 shots and over 4.5 Barcelona corners @ 6/5

Even in their 4-0 Copa del Rey defeat on this ground in February, Barcelona had 14 shots and won eight corners. They’d racked up five corners by the interval, despite conceding four times in a woeful first half.

The home team’s many central midfield issues suggest that Pedri will take control in that department here. Atleti will likely look to replicate their approach in the recent Copa del Rey tie, and try to play on the break.

That should see the Catalans post relatively big numbers in terms of shots and corners again. They are averaging 19.7 attempts per game in La Liga, which is the highest figure in the division. Flick’s side have also won 6.86 corners per road fixture in the Spanish top flight.

Given that, I’m using the Bet Builder to back Barcelona to have over 11.5 shots and Barcelona to win over 4.5 corners at 6/5.
