A 12/5 winner headlined our La Liga experts three selections last weekend for his Weekend La Liga Tips.

This week Mark has a dabble on the Friday night game plus two tips from the games on Saturday...

Weekend Spanish Football Betting Tips:

  • Back Getafe to beat Valencia @ 13/8
  • Back BTTS in Villarreal vs Real Sociedad @ 8/11
  • Back the Draw in Real Mallorca vs Sevilla @ 2/1

There are some big games at both ends of La Liga as another round of Spanish top flight action takes place this weekend.

The Catalan derby between Barcelona and 2nd placed Girona is the headline act while with the bottom six all currently winless in their last six matches, there are a number of struggling teams badly in need of a positive result.

Getafe vs Valencia (Friday 20:00)

Matchday 16 kicks off with what has developed into a bit of a grudge match between Getafe and Valencia. Much of the ill feeling dates back to 2019 and a bad tempered Copa del Rey Quarter Final which saw opposing managers trade personal insults and three players sent off in a chaotic ending as Valencia triumphed courtesy of two Stoppage Time goals.

Jose Bordalas was Getafe boss at the time and for a while was public enemy number one in Valencia before making a surprise switch to Mestalla in 2021. Fast forward to 2023 and Bordalas is back at Getafe and doing a very good job again at the Coliseum.

Bordalas steered the South Madrid club from the foot of the Segunda Division to the brink of the Champions League during his first spell at the club with a very direct and some would say dirty brand of football.

Second time around, it’s not much different. Getafe have received 12 more yellow cards than any other team in La Liga this term while they also lead the way with five reds along with Cadiz. Their passing accuracy and possession stats see them rank in the bottom two in the division, but it’s a style of play that is effective, particularly at home where they remain unbeaten.

Up against a Valencia side that has let in seven goals in their last two away games and crumbled in the closing stages against Girona last weekend, this feels like a good opportunity for the hosts to pick up another good result in front of their own fans.

In contrast to Getafe, Valencia are a very young and much more technical side and there’s a danger that they are simply out-battled and perhaps out-thought by their more physical and more experienced opponents.

Getafe also have the superior attacking options which includes an in-form Borja Mayoral who is now on eight goals for the season and Mason Greenwood who is getting sharper with each passing week. As a result, I’m backing Getafe to win at 13/8.

Villarreal vs Real Sociedad (Saturday 17:30)

Two of Spain’s European participants meet in this one. Real Sociedad are going well and have Champions League knockout stage football to look forward to in the new year, while there may

be some light at the end of the tunnel for Villarreal who have picked up a bit since appointing Marcelino last month.

This game certainly has the potential to serve up a few goals. Scoring hasn’t been a problem for Villarreal this season and they boast the best goalscoring record outside the top six with Gerard Moreno one of best strikers in the division while veteran Jose Luis Morales has been outstanding since the change of coach, scoring each of his team’s last four league goals.

Their chances of getting on the scoresheet here are also significantly boosted by the suspension of Robin Le Normand, Real Sociedad’s best defender and a regular starter at centre back for the Spanish national team this year.

Keeping goals out remains an issue for the hosts though. They’ve let in 16 in their eight home fixtures this term and it’s a back line that has been significantly weakened by the departure of Pau Torres and the gradual decline of what is now a 38 year old Raul Albiol.

Real Sociedad are not short on creative options with Take Kubo and Brais Mendez both capable of opening up this vulnerable opposing defence while Mikel Oyarzabal and Umar Sadiq, who scored a stunner at Osasuna last weekend, should provide the goal threat.

I’m backing both teams to score at 8/11 here, a bet that has landed in every one of Villarreal’s home games so far this season in the league and 71% of Real Sociedad’s away matches.

Real Mallorca vs Sevilla (Saturday 20:00)

If you’re looking for entertainment in La Liga this weekend, you may want to look elsewhere, with everything pointing to this being a tight, low-scoring contest between two badly out of form teams who can’t buy a win right now.

Mallorca were excellent last season, finishing in the top half of La Liga for the first time in more than a decade. However they were far from free-scoring and things have only got worse in that regard after they let their most creative player Kang-in Lee leave to join PSG in the summer.

With star striker Vedat Muriqi currently injured and €7.5m summer signing Cyle Larin yet to open his account, Mallorca are badly misfiring in the final third and right now it’s hard to know where their next goal is going to come from, let alone their next win.

It’s just one victory in 15 this season in La Liga for the Balearic Islanders, but things aren’t going much better over in Seville.

The knives are already out for Diego Alonso who is nearing two months in the job but is yet to win a league game. Were it not for a very controversial VAR call which ruled out what would have been a brilliant Stoppage Time winner from former Blackburn striker Ben Brereton Diaz,

Sevilla would have sunk to defeat against Villarreal last weekend and there’s every chance Alonso would have been out of a job.

That was a sixth draw in seven league outings overall for Sevilla while Mallorca are La Liga’s draw specialists with over half of their matches this term ending level, including six of their seven home games.

Given all that, backing the Draw at 2/1 looks like it could be worth a punt in the Full Time result market.
