Italy vs Spain Bet Builder Tips: 5/1 pick for final group game

Spain have already secured top spot in their group as they head towards their final group game against Italy (20:00 BST, BBC One). They’ve scored 11 goals in their two games so far and are now the massive favourites to win this competition, despite a handsome England win over the Netherlands on Wednesday night.

Italy +2 handicap

This game is a really interesting one to try and assess, given we can predict Spain to make a raft of changes with nothing on the line. I’m expecting Montse Tome to leave her big stars out, with Alexia Putellas, Claudia Pina and Mariona Caldentey likely to be handed a rest. 

Added to that, Ona Batlle and Laia Aleixandri will not be risked given they have picked up yellow cards, so Spain are going to rotate heavily. I think this will give Italy half a chance, especially given that Belgium managed to score twice against the world champions in that 6-2 defeat.

Italy only need a point to progress and should be putting up a strong defensive showing in order to secure it, so I’m going to back them with a +2 handicap in this fixture. They were by far the better team against Portugal and conceded with their only shot on target to draw 1-1, while they also looked good in their 1-0 success over Belgium.

The +2 handicap means we can afford a one-goal defeat, and still be onto a winner.

Even with Spain’s expected changes, there is just too much attacking quality on show to expect a low-scoring encounter. After 11 goals in two matches, we have to back Spain to score again, as even with the changes they have so much strength in depth and should be able to score a couple of goals against Italy. 

Meanwhile, Italy have scored in both matches so far at this Euros, with both teams finding the net in their last three outings. Juventus striker Cristiana Girelli has so much class at the age of 35, and scored against Portugal last time out - so she is likely to cause Spain some problems in this one. Should be a decent watch.

Cristina Martin-Prieto to score anytime

Several of Spain’s attackers have had to wait patiently for their chance at this tournament, but I think a few of them will be unleashed in this final group game. The one I’m most excited about seeing more of is Cristina Martin-Prieto - who has only made six appearances for her country but has three goals in those fixtures, including one against Portugal in this tournament

She’s in the squad off the back of a flying season for Benfica, in which she scored 18 goals in 20 games, as well as winning the league's best player award. I’d like to see her start this one and if she does, I think she can keep up this remarkable scoring run.
