Luxembourg were humbled 9-0 by a rampant Portugal in the last round of qualifying games, but they still have a real chance of securing a spot at Euro 2024 and may be able to bounce back against an Iceland side whose own hopes of heading to Germany are fading.

Iceland vs Luxembourg tips

  • Luxembourg to win @ 10/3
  • Luxembourg to win 2-1 @ 14/1

Team News

Iceland need all three points if they are to stand any chance of a late surge into the top two spots in Group J but they will be without one of their star men when they face Luxembourg on Friday.

Burnley forward Johann Berg Gudmundsson is unavailable due to injury and he would surely have started if he were fit. Boss Age Hareide is expected to name an attacking side and that means Jon Dagur Thorsteinsson and Hakon Arnar Haraldsson could be in the first XI.

Luxembourg coach Luc Holz is likely to keep faith with the side that have picked up 10 points from six games so far, meaning major changes to the side beaten 9-0 by the Portuguese are not anticipated here.

Luxembourg to win @ 10/3

Luxembourg have conceded 16 goals in six qualifying games but that isn’t a fair reflection on how good this team are defensively, as Portugal have scored 15 of those.

The Red Lions have three wins in those six games and they claimed a deserved 3-1 win over Iceland in the reverse fixture, and at a big price they look excellent value to back that up with a road success.

It has been a poor qualification campaign so far for Iceland with just two wins in their six games, losing four of those. The home side have lost five of their last seven games overall and have two defeats in their last three at home.

The fact Luxembourg were thrashed by Portugal last time out is a concern, but they will also be desperate to make amends and they responded to a 6-0 defeat by the same opponents by winning three straight competitive games and they can bounce back with an eye-catching win in Iceland on Friday.

Luxembourg to win 2-1 @ 14/1

Luxembourg won the reverse fixture 3-1 with a dominant performance as they opened up a 2-0 lead before Iceland pulled a late goal back, only for Holz’s men to restore their two-goal advantage soon after.

The visitors probably won’t have such an easy time in Reykjavik and may have to settle for a one-goal margin of victory.

Iceland should be able to get on the scoresheet as they seek to keep their qualification hopes alive. Indeed, scoring hasn’t been the problem for the home side as they have managed 10 in their six qualifiers and have scored in two of their three home fixtures.

However, the home side need to try and force the issue as only three points will do – and Luxembourg have enough quality to hit them on the break and come away with a 2-1 win.

Match Odds

Iceland are 4/5 favourites to claim all three points, with the draw priced at 5/2 and Luxembourg 10/3 to triumph.

Luxembourg won the last meeting 3-1 and a repeat of that scoreline is available at 40/1, while a win for the visitors and both teams to score is priced at 15/2.

Andri Gudjohnsen is 15/8 to grab a goal anytime and 5/1 to score the first or last goal of the contest.
