Arguably the standout clash of the opening EFL weekend sees Huddersfield Town host Leyton Orient at the Accu Stadium (15:00, Sky Sports+). There’s plenty to watch out for as Lee Grant makes his managerial bow in the home dugout, while Richie Wellens will hope to get his side going again after that heartbreaking play-off final defeat to Charlton Athletic in May.

Below you will find my Huddersfield vs Leyton Orient predictions featuring team news and betting tips.

Team News

New manager Grant has been given a lot of talent to work with this year after some eye-catching investment in players this summer. Alfie May comes in from Birmingham City for over £1m and should guarantee goals while Ryan Ledson joins from Preston and Lynden Gooch arrives from Stoke.

Marcus Harness and Murray Wallace bring plenty of experience from the Championship and you have to say that the Terriers are automatic promotion contenders this term. Getting all these stars into a functional team will be Grant’s biggest test, but if he gets it right, they could fly.

Huddersfield vs Leyton Orient Stats

  • Only Birmingham scored more goals than Leyton Orient in L1 last season
  • Huddersfield has signed Alfie May, who scored 16 goals last term for the Blues

Leyton Orient still have Wellens in charge, and that is a big plus, and he continues to gain admirers up and down the Football League. Winger Josh Koroma could make his first competitive start for the O’s against the club he left this summer - with a point to prove.

Aaron Connolly could lead the line for Wellens having joined on a free from Millwall while Demetri Mitchell comes highly-regarded from Exeter City. Replacing the goals of Charlie Kelman will be a tough ask this term, as the departed loanee hit 23 in 45 appearances last term.

Huddersfield vs Leyton Orient Odds

Huddersfield are the 19/20 favourites to win this opener which gives them an implied win probability of 53%. Leyton Orient are 11/4 to take the win while a draw can be backed at 13/5.

Over 2.5 goals is 10/11, BTTS is 8/11 and Dion Charles is the favourite to open the scoring for the hosts at 5/1.

Over 2.5 goals @ 10/11

I will have a nibble at the over 2.5 goals on offer for this clash - given the attacking talent on show. May is guaranteed to get 15+ goals at this level if he avoids injury given his quality, while only record-breaking champions Birmingham City scored more goals in League 1 than Leyton Orient (72) did last term.

The loss of Kelman is a blow but Wellens’ style of play is attacking and as a result, his teams are always likely to find the net, home or away. With Huddersfield wanting to get off to a positive start, I think over 2.5 goals is a sensible selection on opening weekend.

Leyton Orient to win and BTTS @ 11/2

Here’s the big price for you. Leyton Orient proved themselves to be a top League 1 outfit last term, Wellens is one of the finest managers at this level and they have made some good summer signings. Do I think they will finish above Huddersfield come May? No.

But I do believe that they can take advantage of a Terriers outfit that may not be cohesive, with plenty of new signings to bed in and a new manager taking charge of the first game of the 2025/26 campaign. With both teams likely to get on the scoresheet, the away win offers cracking value.
