Girona vs liverpool predictions betting tips uefa champions league tuesday december 10 2024

Girona have taken just three points from their first five Champions League games this year, losing four and winning once in the league phase. The La Liga side's next assignment, meanwhile, could be their toughest yet, as they host faultless leaders Liverpool at the Estadio Municipal de Montilivi on Tuesday (17:45, TNT Sports 1).

The Reds have won all five matches in Europe this season, scoring 12 goals and conceding just once - can they make it six from six in Spain? Ahead of this midweek match, I have outlined my Girona vs Liverpool prediction, which you can check out below.

Girona vs Liverpool Betting Tips

  • To Win Both Halves - Liverpool @ 11/5
  • Player Shots on Target - Virgil van Dijk (LIV) @ 2/1

Team News

Girona are missing two key players - Venezuelan midfielder Yangel Herrera and Ukrainian attacker Viktor Tsygankov - for the visit of Liverpool, although they are bolstered by the return of Arnau Martinez, who was suspended for their 1-0 defeat to Sturm Graz in Austria last time out in the Champions League.

Jhon Solis missed Saturday's 3-0 loss at home to Real Madrid on Saturday but hasn't been completely ruled out of Tuesday's game.

There are several former Premier League players to watch out for in the hosts' line-up in midweek including Oriel Romeu, Donny van de Beek, Daley Blind and Danjuma, while on-loan Tottenham Hotspur winger Bryan Gil is expected to play an important role on the left-hand side of Girona's attack.

Football Odds

Liverpool will be without a trio of defenders - Ibrahima Konate, Conor Bradley and Kostas Tsimikas - for the trip to Spain, while Federico Chiesa is a doubt after missing training on Monday due to illness. Alexis Mac Allister also misses out as he serves a one-game suspension for an accumulation of yellow cards in the competition.

Alisson Becker and Diogo Jota were both pictured in training this week so there is a chance that the duo could make their long-awaited returns from injury on Tuesday, although the latter would almost certainly be restricted to a late substitute cameo if indeed he does get on the pitch at all. Alisson, meanwhile, has a better chance of starting as head coach Arne Slot could view the match as an ideal opportunity to give the Brazilian goalkeeper some all-important game time ahead of Saturday's Premier League clash with Fulham at Anfield.

Caoimhin Kelleher, however, will be hoping to keep hold of his spot for a little longer.

A few changes to Slot's 'preferred' XI would have been expected on Tuesday considering Liverpool's comfortable position in the table and the fact it comes between important league games against Everton and Fulham, but with last Saturday's Merseyside derby called off due to adverse weather conditions, the Dutchman may be tempted into naming his 'strongest' side.

I expect starts for the likes of Virgil van Dijk, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Ryan Gravenberch and Mohamed Salah, but opportunities could also be handed to fringe players such as Harvey Elliott.

Girona are 11/2 to break out of a four-game winless run in all competitions and beat Liverpool on Tuesday. Those odds give the Blanquivermells an implied win probability of 15.4%, while the Reds, who have already disposed of AC Milan (1-3), Bologna (2-0), RB Leipzig (0-1), Bayer Leverkusen (4-0) and Real Madrid (2-0) in the league phase, are 2/5, or a 71.4% chance, to maintain their 100 per cent record in this season's Champions League.

The draw is priced at 100/30, both teams to score at 8/11, and over 2.5 total goals at 8/15.

Salah (19/20) heads the anytime goalscorer market, followed by teammates Jota (13/10), Darwin Nunez (11/8) and Luis Diaz (13/8), with Bojan Miovski and Abel Ruiz (both 11/4) first up for the hosts.

To Win Both Halves - Liverpool @ 11/5

You don't get much bang for your buck by merely backing Liverpool to beat Girona on Tuesday, so picking the Reds to win both halves at 11/5 might be a more enticing option if you're feeling confident over Slot's side in Spain.

Liverpool have triumphed in all five Champions League games this season and have won both halves on two occasions, away to AC Milan (1-3) at San Siro where they were 2-1 up at half-time before adding a third in the second half, and at home to Bologna where they won 2-0, splitting their goals up either side of the interval. The Premier League leaders have also won both halves on four occasions in the English top flight this term, most recently in a 2-0 victory over reigning champions Manchester City at Anfield on December 1.

Girona, meanwhile, have lost four of their opening five league phase games in Europe this season and were beaten in both halves by PSV Eindhoven on November 5 with the Dutch side scoring two in each half to land a 4-0 win at Philips Stadion.

Michel's side have also lost both halves on three occasions in La Liga, including at home to Real Madrid on Saturday when the visitors opened the scoring through Jude Bellingham in the 36th minute before Arda Guler and Kylian Mbappe made sure of the three points for Los Blancos in the second period.

Liverpool should be well rested ahead of their midweek match following the postponement of Saturday's Merseyside derby so should be raring to go from the off in Spain, while they will be desperate to wrap the game up as soon as possible in the second half to make changes and rest their key men ahead of their weekend fixture with Fulham.

Girona have failed to impress on the continental stage this season and look like easy prey at the Estadio Municipal de Montilivi.

Player Shots on Target - Virgil van Dijk (LIV) @ 2/1

Liverpool captain Van Dijk has scored twice in 2024/25 so far, netting one apiece in the Premier League and Champions League, although the Dutch defender will feel that he should be on a higher tally having missed a few presentable opportunities from set-piece situations.

The 33-year-old headed Liverpool's second goal of the game against Milan on matchday one of the Champions League and saw a header saved by Hungarian shot-stopper Peter Gulasci in the Reds' next away trip at Leipzig, so he could make it three out of three league phase away games with a shot on target on Tuesday.

Van Dijk shot three times in the recent victory over Man City, with his first effort - a header - saved by Citizens goalkeeper Stefan Ortega, while his only Premier League goal this term came at the Emirates Stadium against Arsenal on October 27 and, surprise surprise, that was scored via his head.

Liverpool are averaging 5.2 corners taken per game in this season's Champions League so there should be plenty of opportunities for Van Dijk to get himself on the end of a delivery from vice-captain Alexander-Arnold and, at the very least, force the opposition goalkeeper into a save.
