A potentially huge clash in the La Liga title race lies in wait on Wednesday evening (KO, 20:30), as Girona host Atletico Madrid at Estadio Municipal de Montilivi.

Girona were surprise leaders heading into the final round of fixtures before Christmas but a 1-1 draw at Betis, coupled with Real Madrid's 1-0 win over Alaves, saw them knocked off top spot heading into Christmas and the new year, though the sides are still level on points.

It's shaping up to be a four-way race at the top of the table with Atletico and Barcelona both on 38 points, seven behind Real Madrid and Girona, but Los Colchoneros boss Diego Simeone knows all too well that defeat for his side in Girona could spell the end of their challenge.

Team News

Girona will hope to have Ukrainian midfielder Viktor Tsygankov back after a two-game injury layoff, but there are doubts over the fitness of Yangel Herrera, Borja Garcia and Ricard Artero.

David Lopez is definitely out, however, with the Girona defender coming off injured 33 minutes into their last game.

For the visitors, ex-Leicester City centre-back Caglar Soyuncu is banned after a brief substitute appearance against Sevilla last time out resulted in a red card, though fellow defender Mario Hermoso is set to return after serving a suspension of his own.

Pablo Barrios, Thomas Lemar and Vitolo remain absent through injury, while Mozambique defender Reinildo Mandava is away with his national team preparing for the Africa Cup of Nations.

Marcos Llorente will hope his instant impact against Sevilla - where he scored within a minute of his introduction - is enough to earn him a start on Wednesday.

Match Odds

Girona are narrow favourites to win on Wednesday at 6/4, with an Atletico victory just behind at 13/8 and the draw at 5/2.

Five of Girona's last seven La Liga matches have gone over 2.5 goals, and it's 4/6 for it to happen again. Both teams to score, meanwhile, is available at 8/15.

Girona or draw and both teams to score @ 6/5

Both teams to score has landed in 67% (12/18) of Girona's La Liga matches this term, with only Villarreal (15/18) and Almeria (13/18) seeing it come in more times. The figure drops down to 44% (4/9) at home, but three of their last five at Estadio Municipal de Montilivi have seen both teams score.

BTTS - Yes has only landed in one Atletico away game - a 2-1 defeat at Las Palmas in November - but the onus is on them to score at least once on Wednesday after three successive defeats on their travels, the last two of which have seen them fail to score.

Girona are a hugely impressive team under Michel and the following statistic is by no means a stick to beat them with, but only Getafe (23) and Valencia (22) have conceded more out of the teams in the top-half of La Liga. Eight of the 21 goals Girona have conceded have come in their last seven league games, with six of those matches seeing both teams score and Girona avoiding defeat.

Highest scoring half - second half @ 21/20

The difference in goals in the first half of Girona home matches and the second half of Girona home matches is minimal, with 15 and 16 scored respectively. However, three of their last four at home have seen zero goals scored in the first half, and at least one scored in the second half.

Atletico, meanwhile, tend to keep things tight in the first half of away matches - only eight have been scored in the opening half, compared to 13 in the second half.

Similar to Girona at home, three of Atletico's last four on the road have seen more goals in the second half.
