Germany and Hungary were group-stage opponents at Euro 2024, with the tournament hosts winning 2-0 at the MHPArena in Stuttgart on June 19. That defeat helped to condemn the Magyars to an early exit, while the Germans endured a last-gasp extra-time defeat to Spain in the quarter-finals.

The two nations renew rivalries in the Nations League Group A3 at the Merkur Spiel-Arena in Dusseldorf on Saturday (19:45) and you can build up to the action by checking out all the latest team news and match odds in my Germany vs Hungary prediction below.

  • Both Teams to Score - Yes @ 1/1
  • Anytime Scorer - Dominik Szoboszlai @ 9/2

Team News

Experienced international campaigners Manuel Neuer, Ilkay Gundogan, Thomas Muller and Toni Kroos all retired from the Germany national team following their Euro 2024 exit, with Kroos playing his last-ever professional game in that defeat to eventual champions Spain.

Julian Nagelsmann is now ushering in a new era, with VFB Stuttgart midfielder Angelo Stiller receiving his first-ever senior call-up ahead of September internationals against Hungary and the Netherlands. Bayern Munich’s Aleksandar Pavlovic and Borussia Dortmund’s Maximilian Beier are other relatively new names in the squad who will be supported by the experience of Kai Havertz (Arsenal), Emre Can (Dortmund), and new skipper Joshua Kimmich (Bayern).

Jamal Musiala (Bayern) and Florian Wirtz (Bayer Leverkusen), who scored three and two goals respectively at Euro 2024, are expected to play prominent roles in the starting XI.

Antonio Rudiger (Real Madrid) and Leroy Sane (Bayern) miss out, however, with the former rested and the latter lacking match fitness.

Football Odds

Hungary head coach Marco Rossi has kept faith with many of his senior stars despite their group-stage exit in Germany during the summer. Captain Dominik Szoboszlai (Liverpool) and RB Leipzig pair Peter Gulacsi and Willi Orban are the standout names in the setup, but there is no space for defensive trio Adam Lang (Omonia), Attila Fiola (Ujpest) or Attila Szalai (Hoffenheim), nor West Bromwich Albion’s Callum Styles, all of whom were in the squad for the summer tournament.

Barnabas Varga (Ferencvaros) has recovered from the head injury he suffered in Hungary's final group game of Euro 2024, a 1-0 victory over Scotland at Saturday's venue.

Germany are heavy favourites to take all three points in Dusseldorf, with odds of 1/4 giving them an implied win probability of 80%, while Hungary are 10/1, or a 9.1% chance, to triumph again on German soil, having beaten their next opponents 1-0 in their last Nations League meeting in Leipzig in September 2022.

The draw is available at 5/1, both teams to score at 1/1, and over 2.5 total goals at 8/15.

Havertz leads the way in the anytime scorer market at 23/20, with Varga (4/1) rated as Hungary's most likely anytime scorer.

Both Teams to Score - Yes @ 1/1

Germany beat Hungary 2-0 in their Euro 2024 Group A encounter on June 19, but it wasn't as simple as the scoreline may suggest, with the Magyars coming close on several occasions to breaching the host nation's back line.

Four starters in that victory for Germany - Neuer, Rudiger, Gundogan and Kroos - won't be featuring on Saturday, so there is a degree of disruption in this new-look German side which wasn't all that solid anyway as they conceded to each of Scotland, Switzerland and Spain during the Euros.

Hungary have scored in eight of their last nine competitive contests - the defeat to Germany proving to be the outlier - so they will be confident of hurting the hosts on Saturday.

BTTS - Yes landed in Hungary's final four Euro 2024 qualifiers last year, as well as in their opening group game against Switzerland (1-3), so you can usually count on a goal on either side in a match involving Hungary.

At EVS, I'm taking on both teams to score in Dusseldorf on Saturday.

Both teams to score - yes in germany vs hungary @ 1-1

Anytime Scorer - Dominik Szoboszlai @ 9/2

Szoboszlai endured a disappointing Euros, failing to score as his nation crashed out at the group stage. He wasn't awful by any imagination, but for a country like Hungary to advance to the knockouts, they really needed the 23-year-old to be firing on all cylinders.

He also faced criticism for his Liverpool performances at the back end of last season as the Premier League side's quadruple hopes disintegrated, but he's returned full of vigour at the start of the 2024/25 campaign, producing a particularly industrious display in a 3-0 victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford last Sunday.

Szoboszlai will now be hoping to get off the mark for the season when he skippers Hungary against Germany on Saturday. German supporters will know all about Szoboszlai from his two-year spell at RB Leipzig, where he struck six Bundesliga goals in each of his seasons at the club.

The midfielder's last goal came back on March 26 when he found the opener in Hungary's 2-0 friendly victory over Kosova, four days after netting the only goal of the game in a 1-0 win against Turkey.

Szoboszlai does tend to turn it on for his country, as evidenced by the four goals he struck in their successful Euro 2024 qualification campaign, and so odds of 9/2 for him to score anytime in Dusseldorf on Saturday pique my interest somewhat.
