England are close to achieving sporting immortality at Euro 2024. They are in another semi-final and if they can get past the Netherlands, they will take on Spain on Sunday. Two wins away from winning the first men’s international trophy since 1966. If they manage to get the job done, Gareth Southgate will have silenced all of his critics.

But will he get knighted by King Charles III? We discuss the possibility below, as we take a look at the Gareth Southgate to be knighted odds.

The England manager has led the Three Lions over the last four tournaments, and his record is absolutely superb. It’s a record that no other England manager aside from Sir Alf Ramsey can better, and he’s done it on a far more consistent basis than the World Cup winner.

When he took the job in 2016, the Three Lions were at their lowest ebb. Iceland had dumped them out of Euro 2016, and then Sam Allardyce had the job taken away from him after being stung for potentially accepting a £400k payment from a non-existent company.

Southgate walked into a squad that was hated by the nation, and a group of players who simply didn’t have any confidence in themselves to perform at the top level. In 2018, he donned his waistcoast and took them to Russia, as the journey began. There wasn’t any expectation heading into that tournament, but with Harry Maguire and John Stones heading in set pieces, England made it all the way to the semi-finals.

They were knocked out by Croatia, but the manager had turned the ship around, and made the country fall in love with the national team once again. By the time Euro 2020 came around, delayed for a year due to Covid-19, expectations had risen. Southgate had a talented crop of young players coming through and on home soil, England nearly went all the way.

They enjoyed famous nights against Germany and Denmark before Italy devastatingly beat them on penalties in the final. It wasn’t to be on that occasion, but Southgate had put England amongst the elite once again. They were a force to be reckoned with as they headed to Qatar for the 2022 winter World Cup.

A solid group stage showing and a big win over Senegal set up a gargantuan quarter-final against France. The then world champions had Kylian Mbappe in flying form, and England put in a fantastic performance, but lost 2-1. Harry Kane missed a late penalty and that was that. Many though that would be the end of the road for Southgate, but he wasn’t done just yet.

In Germany this year, he has faced seemingly insurmountable criticism at every turn. He’s picked a wildly different squad to the past, and the results and performances haven’t been great. But, yet again, England are in another semi-final under his reign. And they are two games away from sporting greatness.

Southgate may finally get the flowers he deserves if England go all the way, and surely the 2025 New Year’s Honours list will contain his name. Even if England make the final and lose valiantly, he may still stand an outside chance of being knighted. Currently at odds of 1/1, expect that price to be shorter if England do edge past the Netherlands.

“Gareth Southgate, the whole of England is with you.”
