Football bet of the day

Saturday’s football sees several key friendlies and the continuation of the Scottish League Cup, which throws up plenty of intriguing ties in the group stage.

I’ve picked out one of them as we look to land a winner for Saturday’s Football Bet of the Day.

Dumbarton vs Cove Rangers Odds

A dead rubber between Dumbarton and Cove Rangers may not get the pulses racing for most punters, but I think there’s a big shout for value in the goals market in this one. These two sit in fourth and fifth in Group C, and even after just three games, progression seems incredibly unlikely.

Dumbarton were one of the worst teams in Scotland last season as they finished ninth out of ten in League Two, picking up 35 points from 36 games. They conceded 61 goals in 31 outings, and manager Frank McKeown has won just five of 26 matches in charge, at a win rate of just 19%.

There’s little to get excited about for Dumbarton, who look set for another relegation battle this term. In fact, their performances in the League Cup, albeit against higher-ranked opposition, have been concerning.

Football Odds

They lost 5-3 to East Kilbride, 4-1 to Dunfermline Athletic and 4-0 to St Mirren, so you can see that they are defensively weak. 13 goals conceded this season already in just three games means I think we can be confident in backing them to concede plenty of goals, and therefore lose the game.

Cove Rangers are not as good as some of their other opponents, given they finished seventh in League One last, but they are still a level above Dumbarton. I rank the Sons as one of the weakest teams in Scotland, while Cove have won a game in this competition, beating East Kilbride 3-2.

They have conceded nine goals in two games against St Mirren and Dunfermline, so I think an open encounter is on the cards, but I would back the away side to come away with the three points in a high-scoring affair.
