Football bet of the day

After Argentina failed to impress in their narrow 3-2 extra-time win over Cape Verde, the bottom half of the World Cup draw has started to look a little open. Switzerland and Colombia will certainly fancy their chances of progressing deep into the international extravaganza and the pair will meet in Vancouver for their last-16 showdown on Tuesday night (1pm local, 9pm BST, ITV 1).

A place in the World Cup quarter-finals is at stake and the tie looks likely to deliver plenty of entertainment, as outlined below in my Football Bet of the Day.

Football Bet of the Day - Tuesday 7 July 2026

Switzerland and Colombia will both fancy their chances of securing a place in the quarter-finals of the World Cup, and the goals are likely to flow in Vancouver.

Sunday's last-16 tie delivered a 2-1 win for Norway over Brazil, before England beat Mexico 3-2 in the early hours of Monday morning, and the knockout rounds of the World Cup could keep on delivering goals.

Colombia have scored just once in their last two World Cup games against Portugal and Ghana, but that record is misleading regarding head coach Nestor Lorenzo's approach.

Los Cafeteros were already assured of qualification in their final Group K contest with Portugal. However, the South Americans still hit 24 efforts on goal and created an expected goals figure of 1.70 in that 0-0 draw.

Switzerland vs Colombia Odds

Colombia have registered 79 efforts on goal in their four World Cup matches, and with Luis Diaz, Luis Suarez, James Rodriguez and Jhon Arias in attack, they are evidently a forward-thinking side.

Switzerland have scored eight times in their last three matches in North America and their 2-0 last-32 victory over Algeria saw the A-Team record an xG number of 2.45.

In the group stage, Bosnia and Herzegovina were beaten 4-1, Canada fell 2-1 and the 1-1 draw against Qatar saw the Swiss record 68 per cent possession, hit 26 shots and create an expected goals total of 3.20.

Murat Yakin's men are not a side to sit deep with a low block, and even with a place in the last 16 for the World Cup at stake, Switzerland were firmly on the front foot against Algeria.

The A-Team have Breel Embolo firing up front, the excellent Johan Manzambi in the number 10 position, Granit Xhaka bossing the midfield and Ruben Vargas and Dan Ndoye providing dynamism in the wide positions.

There is a lot to like about Switzerland and Colombia and their meeting in Vancouver is a tie which both teams will fancy their chances of winning.

The match betting market looks a hard place to find value, but at 5/4, over 2.5 goals could be overpriced in what should be an attacking and entertaining match.
