Football Bet of the Day: The Blue Sharks can prey on La Celeste

We're into the second week of the FIFA World Cup and although we've had some high-scoring games, I believe the best moment so far has been debutants Cape Verde taking a point from the pre-tournament favourites and 2010 champions Spain in Group H.
Former two-time winners Uruguay are the Blue Sharks' next opponents on Sunday at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami (6pm local/11pm BST, BBC One). I think there's value to be had in this clash and so this is where I'm picking my latest Football Bet of the Day.
Football Bet of the Day - 21 June 2026
- Double Chance - Draw or Cape Verde @ 6/4
*Odds correct as of the time of publication
Uruguay are deemed the favourites to win this game by Betfred, who have La Celeste priced up at 4/9.
Cape Verde are a 7/1 bet to land their first-ever victory at the World Cup finals. Both sides played out draws in their opening Group H matches and the stalemate here is on offer at 3/1.
Maximiliano Araujo was the man on the scoresheet for Uruguay against Saudi Arabia, and he's 3/1 to repeat that feat in Betfred's Player To Score (Sub Switch) market.
Going off the form of the two sides - and with an emphasis on what we saw from them in their World Cup openers - my Bet of the Day is Draw or Cape Verde in the Double Chance market.
I was very impressed by how the Creoles handled their debut on this stage against the team widely-tipped to win the whole thing. They defended resiliently against Spain and even asked questions of La Roja's own back line.
When Diney Borges rose up to head the ball from a corner deep into stoppage time, I was primed to leap from my sofa and celebrate what would've been one of the greatest moments in World Cup history.
While they almost snatched an almighty three points, Cape Verde left with one which they thoroughly deserved. Much has been said about the expansion of the the tournament to 48 teams and some of the nations that have made the cut, but the Blue Sharks are so far proving that they belong.
Football Bet of the Day Stats
- Cape Verde are 13 games unbeaten
- Uruguay are winless in 5 matches, with 4 of their results being draws
That's why I'm feeling quite optimistic about their chances of getting a result against Uruguay. Marcelo Bielsa's side didn't look convincing against Saudi Arabia, and some might say they didn't look particularly bothered - a bit like their head coach for his World Cup photoshoot.
I think if Cape Verde were able to frustrate and challenge the European champions, they can certainly make life troublesome for Uruguay. The Blue Sharks are 13 games unbeaten (in regulation time) across all competitions, and their confidence should've grown exponentially following their point against Spain.
Uruguay head into this match without a win in five and four of them have been draws. Call me crazy, reactionary or whatever you want to label it, but I predict Cape Verde will come away with at least a point in this game.
They could even be in a position where qualification to the knockout stage is likely with three points, which would be utterly remarkable. The Creoles were 6/4 before the tournament began to qualify from Group H, the same odds as Sunday's Bet of the Day.
