Football Bet of the Day: All-Irish clash in the Champions League

The Champions League continues to provide excellent ties in the first qualification round, and arguably the pick of the bunch sees Shelbourne face Linfield in the battle that pits the Republic of Ireland against Northern Ireland.
This one kicks off at 19:45 and is live on BBC iPlayer, while it also takes the focus for Wednesday’s Football Bet of the Day.
Football Bet of the Day - Wednesday, July 9
- Draw - Shelbourne vs Linfield @ 2/1

This feels like a really even tie in my eyes, which could go either way. Shelbourne won the League of Ireland by two points last season, but the 2025 campaign has been difficult for them. They currently sit fifth in the league after 25 matches, and just two weeks ago, the manager that won them the league stepped down.
That was former Chelsea winger Damien Duff, and it means that their tag as favourites for this tie may not be as stable as first thought. They are priced at 11/10 to win this first leg on home soil and that is understandable given the League of Ireland is a division that boasts more quality than the NIFL Premiership, but I wouldn’t be too keen to jump on them at that price.
Football Bet of the Day Stats
- Damien Duff left Shelbourne two weeks ago
- They sit fifth in the League of Ireland after 25 matches
- Linfield are the seeded side in this draw
There’s clearly a level of uncertainty right now at the club and they’ve been massively struggling in the league. Added to that, Shels are the competition’s third-lowest ranked team, ahead of only clubs from San Marino and Albania, based upon last year being their first appearance in Europe in 18 years.
It means David Healy’s Linfield, who are yet to start their new season, will fancy their chances of progressing, although the former striker isn’t too happy with the tough draw.
“Out of the possibles that we could have got, personally I think it’s the toughest. I would imagine Shelbourne, being the unseeded team, may be quite happy with the draw. The plan is to be in the tie when we get to Windsor Park the week after. It’s a tough test.”
They recently lost the 2025 Charity Shield on penalties to Dungannon Swifts, but given the way Healy is talking, I think another draw is the most likely outcome here. ‘Wanting to get the back to Windsor Park’ doesn’t speak of a side that will go out all guns blazing in this away leg, so I believe they will set up defensively.
I think with Shels lack of form and change in manager, combined with Linfield’s game plan we could see parity in this first leg. Our Football Bet of the Day for Wednesday is a draw between Shelbourne and Linfield at a price of 2/1.
