Football Bet of the Day: Big five-fold for Champions League night

What a day to get to pick the Football Bet of the Day. We’ve got every single Champions League team kicking off at the same time as the league phase comes to what should be an entertaining finale. There are only a couple of matches with nothing riding on them which means we should get drama from start to finish. 

Manchester City could be knocked out, PSG are at risk and Celtic are dreaming of a top-eight spot and automatic qualification. For the Football Bet of the Day for Wednesday, January 29, I’ve picked out a special Midweek Bundle from Betfred. It’s certainly piqued my interest, and here’s why.

Manchester City have to win if they are going to make it into the top 24 teams and secure a place in the knockout round. They face Club Brugge, who are currently three points above them but have a worse goal difference, so Pep Guardiola’s men know that a win on Wednesday should secure their progression. 

They’ve obviously not been at their best in Europe this term but they did beat Sparta Prague 5-0 at home and I expect the quality difference to be obvious here. It should be a benefit to us that there is a lot on the line and a draw will not be enough for the hosts. Expect Erling Haaland and Phil Foden to come to the fore and show their class in a dominant home win. 

Lille have already secured a place in the top 24, but they still have a chance to break into the top eight, which would put them directly into the last 16 and avoid the knockout play-off round. They’ve been one of the surprise packages of this season’s competition and pushed Liverpool all the way at Anfield last time out, only losing 2-1 with 10 men.

They host Feyenoord on the final day and having beaten Real and Atletico Madrid and drawn with Juventus, that seems like a truly winnable game for Bruno Genesio’s team. The Dutch giants sit level on points with LOSC, so this is set to be a winner-takes-all shootout, and I’m happy to back the home side to come out on top. 

Sporting CP were in a fantastic position to qualify for the knockout stages, but after three consecutive defeats now they know they have to beat Bologna at home to secure their spot in the knockout play-off round. The Italians have won just one of their seven matches so far and are out of the competition, so it really is up to Sporting to take the initiative and win this relatively kind home fixture. With Viktor Gyokeres, one of the finest strikers in Europe up top, they should be able to get the job done.

Real Madrid have stuttered during this Champions League campaign, but we all know that it is when the knockouts begin that they get going in Europe. They sit 16th but need a win at Brest to try and break into that valuable top eight. Given they have scored 17 goals in their last four matches in all competitions, I think they will get it in style. The superstars appear to be finally gelling, which spells bad news for the rest of the competition. Brest sit one point above them after a fantastic campaign, but I just don’t think they will be able to handle the might of Real Madrid on this occasion. 

We finish our spectacular five-fold with Inter Milan, who sit fourth after a great start to their UCL this term. They still need a point to confirm a top-eight finish, and will want to finish on a high to improve their ranking. They host a Monaco outfit who have also got a lot to play for, but I think they will have to settle for a place in the knockout play-off round.
