Derby county pride park

Wednesday night sees a whole load of Premier League action taking place, but our focus for the Football Bet of the Day comes from the Championship, where Derby County are hosting Preston North End at Pride Park.

This one kicks off at 19:45 on Sky Sports+, as the Rams search for a vital three points that would carry them out of the relegation zone.

Now I think we are getting terrific value on backing Derby County to win this match. It feels as though this game has been priced up based on where the two teams are in the table, rather than what we have seen in recent weeks.

John Eustace has done a wonderful job in recent weeks with the Rams, silencing the doubters who criticised him for making the move from Blackburn. As Rovers have slipped down the division, Derby now have a real chance of survival having won their last three games on the bounce, two of those coming at Pride Park.

They are a different beast now than they were earlier in the season and it is this transformation that leads me to believe that they will not only be safe, but be a really tough team to beat between now and the end of the campaign. The Rams have seen off both Blackburn and Coventry at home in the week before the international break, and while they enjoyed a weekend off to prepare for this game, Preston were hammered by Aston Villa in the FA Cup.

Derby vs Preston Odds

Derby vs Preston Stats

  • Derby have won their last three games
  • Preston have only won three away games all season
  • Marcus Harness has scored three goals in his last two matches

That Sunday battering will have taken it out of the Lilywhites, while their injury issues show no signs of letting up. In fact, they have suffered another key blow as goalkeeper Freddie Woodman has been ruled out for the rest of the season with an ankle injury. Although they are a mid-table Championship outfit, with nothing to play for I can see their season fizzling out, and they won’t fancy this trip to the East Midlands on Wednesday night.

Football Odds

Derby are now playing a 3-5-2 system with Jerry Yates and Marcus Harness up top and this brings me onto our Football Bet of the Day. I believe there is excellent value in backing Harness to score first as although he has only got four goals all season, three of those have come in his last two matches. He scored a brace at Plymouth to secure a vital 3-2 win and is flourishing in this new partnership with the experienced Yates.

I think he’s likely to find the net at some point, so let’s back him to score first, while I’m also happy to back a home win. I think Derby are in desperate need of the point, are in cracking form and have had extra time to prepare for this fixture. I’ll back a 2-0 home win based on the fact that 58% of the time their games feature fewer than 2.5 goals, and they got this very same result in their last home match against Coventry.

Harness to score first and Derby to win 2-0 offers massive value at 66/1, so let’s pick that out for our Football Bet of the Day.
