Football Bet of the Day: Basement clash can produce big winner
The bright lights of the Champions League may be taking most of the attention on Wednesday night as Real Madrid face Manchester City, while Liverpool are also in Premier League action as they face Aston Villa. However, we like to look at the games out of the spotlight for our Football Bet of the Day, and the one that has caught my attention on Wednesday is a basement clash in the Championship.
Luton Town host Plymouth Argyle (19:45, Sky Sports+) in a game that could have massive consequences for both teams, and their hopes of staying in this division. Below you can find my Football Bet of the Day for Wednesday, February 19.
Football Bet of the Day - Wednesday, February 19
- Luton vs Plymouth: Away win to nil @ 7/1
Before you write this one off completely, I know this feels like a big ask. I know this is a massive price and I know Plymouth haven’t won away from home this season in the Championship. I’m well aware that they might be the worst team we’ve ever seen in away second tier matches in quite some time, having only amassed four points from 16 games on the road.
They were embarrassing under Wayne Rooney and have conceded 39 goals in 16 matches when playing away from Home Park this campaign. So why am I backing Plymouth to win this game without conceding a goal? Well, I do think it is now only a matter of time before they get off the mark and they travel to the bottom club in the division in Luton Town.
For almost the entirety of this season, people have thought Luton would get out of danger. That is no longer the case and having sacked Rob Edwards, replaced him with Matt Bloomfield and sunk to the bottom of the table, things are looking bleak. Although I rate Bloomfield’s work at Wycombe, I am not sure he is the manager you want in a relegation battle, and he hasn’t improved results since his arrival.
Luton haven’t won since December 20 in the league and one point from their last five games has seen them drop to 24th. They have failed to score in their last two games against Sheffield United and Sunderland, and although they are two promotion-chasers, confidence is low at Kenilworth Road.
Betfred make Luton the favourites to win this match at 8/11 given Plymouth’s woeful away form, but I’d rather back a side who look like they have turned a corner in recent weeks to come out with the win. Argyle lost away at Blackburn last time out but prior to that they had beaten Millwall, West Brom and Liverpool in consecutive matches.
Miron Muslic looks like he is now getting a tune out of this Argyle outfit and they are remarkably now just two points from safety. You can see how much is riding on this game, as the winner could climb out of the bottom three, while the loser is surely going to be the favourite for relegation down to League 1.
I think the pressure from the home fans will work in Plymouth’s favour, and if they can nick the first goal, chaos could ensue from the Luton faithful. They were a Premier League outfit last term, now they are staring at relegation down to League 1. I think Argyle could cause a major shock on Wendesday night, and send shockwaves around the Football League with an away victory to nil.
