Football Bet of the Day: Chile set for further struggles

The March international break is nearly at an end but as is always the case, it will be rounded off with some stonking South American fixtures. There’s Argentina vs Brazil to look forward to tonight, but our focus is drawn to the city of Santiago, where Chile host Ecuador. Below you will find my Football Bet of the Day for Tuesday, March 25.
Football Bet of the Day - Tuesday, March 25
- Ecuador to win to nil vs Chile @ 11/4
*odds correct at the time of writing
I think there’s plenty of value in backing Ecuador to win to nil against Chile. Ecuador have undergone a remarkable transformation under Sebastian Beccacece's leadership and are now on the brink of securing World Cup qualification. After their latest win, they now sit second in the Conmebol table and their impressive run includes six consecutive games without defeat, since they were narrowly beaten 1-0 by Brazil.
Ecuador's defensive prowess is further exemplified by their impressive record of clean sheets, having kept five consecutive shutouts before their 2-1 win over Venezuela. The foundation of their success lies in this defence, and having conceded just once in their last six matches, they’ve found a winning formula. With Moises Caicedo patrolling the midfield and Pervis Estupinan at left-back, there’s an awful lot of quality in this XI.
Chile vs Ecuador Stats
- Ecuador have won their last three matches
- Ecuador have kept five clean sheets out of six
- Chile are bottom of the Conmebol qualifying group
They should be able to keep out an ageing Chile outfit that are struggling to find their footing. They sit bottom of the 10-team qualification group and having ruled this continent on two occasions a decade ago, now look likely to miss their third World Cup in a row. They have only won two out of 13 games and although a win against Venezuela offered a glimmer of hope, it remains their sole competitive success in seven games since their Copa America group stage exit last summer, where they failed to score a single goal.
This is a different era for Chile, but with Alexis Sanchez and Arturo Vidal still knocking about, you can see that there is a clear lack of young players coming through to compete. Meanwhile, Ecuador have come together at the right time with a manager who knows how to grind out results. With Enner Valencia up front, targeting 50 goals before his 100th appearance, they are able to win games in this qualification campaign.
What we have here is one in-form outfit, who have won their last three games and love a clean sheet, coming up against the worst team in Conmebol qualifying. I’m more than happy to side with La Tri, as they look to book their place in another World Cup finals.
