Football Bet of the Day: Another eventful game involving Posh

Peterborough united

Defending champions Peterborough United host Nene derby rivals Northampton Town at the Weston Homes Stadium on Tuesday (19:00, Sky Sports+) in the second round of the EFL Trophy. Posh topped their group with three victories so earned the privilege of the home tie.

Northampton were behind Burton Albion in their group but they will be feeling confident heading into this clash after it was just over a week ago that they defeated Tuesday's hosts 2-1 in League 1 at Sixfields Stadium. This looks to be an interesting tie on paper and so this is the game that I have chosen for my football bet of the day, which you will find below.

Football Bet of the Day - Tuesday, December 17

  • Peterborough and both teams to score @ 2/1

Peterborough United vs Northampton Town Odds

The Cobblers will be thinking that they have a huge psychological advantage heading into this game, but they are not at home on this occasion and Peterborough will be out for revenge. After winning this competition at Wembley Stadium last season, Darren Ferguson and his players will hope to go close again this year.

Since losing to the visitors last week, Posh have since got back to winning ways, defeating Crawley Town 4-3 on home soil at the weekend. Peterborough were 2-0 up, then 3-1 up before Crawley got on level terms. Luckily, Cian Hayes was able to score a second for the home side to secure the three points.

It was yet another high-scoring game involving Posh this season, including goals at both ends. So for my bet of the day for Tuesday, I've gone for Peterborough and both teams to score.

Posh have been having a lot of joy in front of goal this season with 37 scored so far. Only league leaders Wycombe Wanderers have more with 43. However, unlike the Chairboys, Peterborough are not firmly in the promotion race. They sit 13th in the table and seven points off the pace of the play-offs, and that is largely down to the volume of goals they concede.

As good as they can be going forward, they are just as bad defensively, with 35 shipped in League 1 this term. Only bottom-ranked Shrewsbury Town (39) have conceded more than Ferguson's side, which is a huge concern.

There is work to be done in that department if they wish to finish in the top six again this year. For now their focus is on the EFL Trophy, which could end up being an avenue of success for them again this term.

Peterborough United vs Northampton Town - Match Result & Both Teams to Score Peterborough United & Yes

Odds correct at time of publishing.

They have been faultless in this competition so far, having won all three of their fixtures to date, and they have had a much better defensive record than in the league. Posh have conceded just twice so far, so Ferguson will be hoping to build on this against Northampton and look to translate it into the third tier.

With Posh looking sharp in attack but shaky at the back, I think 2/1 offers good value on this market. Peterborough have won 12 games out of 25 this season across all competitions and only one of them has seen them record a clean sheet.

Seven of these victories have come on home soil and have featured both teams on the scoresheet, so I fancy the chances for this trend to continue on Tuesday. Fringe star Abraham Odoh has scored twice in this competition so far, so he is a player who could have an impact if called upon to face Northampton.

The Cobblers were comfortably beaten 3-0 at Rotherham United on Saturday but they have been on the scoresheet in eight of their 12 away games across all competitions in 2024/25, and given Peterborough's horrendous defensive record, I think they will have some more joy on Tuesday - even if it's not enough to win the tie.

Their young striker Neo Dobson has been prolific in the EFL Trophy so far with three goals. The 18-year-old scored a brace against Leicester City Under-21s, while grabbing the other against Burton.

It was Mitchell Pinnock and Tyler Roberts who bagged against Posh last week, and both could have roles to play in this fixture, with the the duo hoping to haunt Ferguson's side for the second time in just over a week.

Both teams are expected to rotate in some way for this game, but with the confidence gained from the weekend, and the stronger squad depth, I think Posh will avenge last week's defeat to progress to the round of 16, where they will face League 2 leaders Walsall - which is a game that isn't to be underestimated.
