Football Bet of the Day: Sniffer dog to find the net again

We’ve got a decent amount of football action coming our way this midweek, including a Premier League round of fixtures.
However, for our Football Bet of the Day on Tuesday, we are heading down to League 1, where Mansfield Town host Charlton Athletic (19:45, Sky Sports+). Check it out below.
Football Bet of the Day - Tuesday, April 1
- Matty Godden to score anytime @ 21/10
*odds correct at the time of writing
Charlton have been in sparkling form over the last few months and Nathan Jones has done a sterling job since taking over at the start of February 2024. It’s amazing to think given they now sit fourth in the table, that they went 18 games without a win over the winter, but their season has turned around.
They smashed Huddersfield Town 4-0 last time out and are now well-set for a play-off place, although it seems the automatic places may just evade them. Their form has been exceptional, as they have now won 11 of their last 15 matches to thrust themselves into contention and although I believe they will get another good result when they visit Mansfield on Tuesday, that isn’t the angle I’ve taken for our Football Bet of the Day.
Instead I’ve backed their man in form to find the net at any time. Matty Godden has been a reliable goalscorer across the Championship and League 1 for the majority of his career, and when the chance came for the Addicks to sign him from Coventry City in the summer, they jumped at the chance.
Mansfield vs Charlton Stats
- Charlton have won 11 of their last 15
- Matty Godden has scored 16 goals this season
- Three have come in his last three matches
For just £400k, they’ve picked up one of the best finishers in the division, and he has started to motor this term. Known as ‘sniffer dog’ to the rest of his teammates he’s now scored 16 goals for the season, and three goals in his last three matches. Against the Terriers, the sniffer dog bit within 31 seconds of kick-off, and I expect him to have plenty of success against Mansfield.
The Stags are 14th in the league having won their last two, but defensively they’ve not been great, conceding 52 goals already this term. They don’t have anything to play for at this stage and I believe Godden will fancy his chances of finding the net again in this one. He’s a man in form, and if he keeps this up, he could fire Charlton all the way into the Championship.
He fired Coventry to promotion in the curtailed 2019/20 season from this level and he has proven to be a reliable goalscorer in the Championship since then. I wouldn’t be surprised if he has a major say on this promotion race, starting with another goal at Field Mill on Tuesday night.
