Football Bet of the Day: Blues chase points record

Stevenage

We’ve got some decent football action coming our way this Thursday and my attention is drawn to League 1. We have known that Birmingham City would be crowned champions for several months, but given their cup exploits, the Blues still have four league matches to play over the last 10 days of the 2024/25 season.

Despite the title being wrapped up, there’s plenty on the line as they travel to Stevenage (19:45), so read on for my Football Bet of the Day.

Football Bet of the Day - Tuesday, April 24

  • Birmingham to beat Stevenage and BTTS @ 16/5

At this stage of the season, some punters will look to those teams at the top of the table and believe they may be about to take their foot off the gas. Birmingham have known they will be playing Championship football for the last few months in truth, but Chris Davies has kept them on a steady footing as they have continued to win game after game.

The Vertu Trophy final was a major disappointment, there is no hiding that, as Peterborough United were fully deserving of their 2-0 win over the League 1 champions. However, in the third tier, Blues have been imperious, winning six of their last seven. The only blemish on that record was the 0-0 draw at home to Crawley Town on Good Friday, but they responded with a 2-1 win at Burton Albion to move onto 99 points for the campaign.

This is where mindset comes into play for arguably the greatest third-tier team we’ve ever seen. They have four games to play, and the points record is well within reach. Reading still hold that EFL record, having posted a whopping 106 points in 2005/06 in the Championship, and Birmingham will hit 111 if they win their final four.

Football Odds

Football Bet of the Day Stats

  • Birmingham have won their last three away games 2-1
  • Both teams have scored in seven of the last eight Birmingham games in League 1

Getting through 100 points has to be the first aim, but there seems to be a real determination from this group of players to kick on and lay down a serious marker. Make no mistake, they will go down in history if they break Reading’s record, and I think they are well set to get another three points against Stevenage on Thursday night.

Stevenage vs Birmingham Odds

Having said all that, Birmingham have won games by fine margins of late, so I think the best bet is to back them to win and BTTS. Stevenage could cause them some issues and given Birmingham’s last three away matches have all ended in 2-1 wins, it feels like that pattern could continue at the Lamex Stadium.

Despite Birmingham’s dominance in the league, they haven’t been as solid as you would expect at the back, with both teams scoring in seven of their last eight matches in the league. That 0-0 with Crawley was the only exception, and I’m more than happy to back this to come in again against Stevenage.

In fact, when the two teams met at the start of March, Birmingham ran out 2-1 winners at St Andrew’s. I’m not quite brave enough to back that correct score to repeat itself, but I do think we will see another entertaining away win on Thursday night - at a big price. The Blues are going up, and they want to set a new points record in the EFL as they look ahead to what could be a very exciting Championship campaign.
