Sunday’s football action features four Premier League matches, St Johnstone v Celtic and a host of games from across the continent. Mainland Europe is starting to simmer as we approach summer, and the football action is also hotting up on the pitch.

Our focus for Sunday’s Football Bet of the Day comes from the frying pan of Spain - Seville. See what you think down below.

Poor Atleti. They’ve received a pummelling in recent weeks from both Real Madrid and Barcelona, as Diego Simeone is forced to once again lick his wounds. The third-best team in Spain regularly come so close to overhauling those giants, but every now and then, they are handed a brutal reminder of where they sit in the pecking order.

City rivals Real knocked them out of the Champions League in the last round, in devastating fashion. Having levelled the tie 2-2 after the second leg, Atleti were once again beaten on penalties by the team they simply cannot get the better of in Europe. They lost to them in the Champions League final in 2014 and 2016, and Simeone is still haunted by those wearing white.

Last time out, it was Barcelona’s time to put them in their place as they beat them 1-0 at home to win their thrilling Copa del Rey semi-final and set up a final against… you guessed it - Real Madrid. Atletico had done incredibly well to draw the first leg 4-4, but Ferran Torres’ goal at the Metropolitano put them out in heartbreaking circumstances.

Sevilla vs Atletico Madrid Stats

  • Sevilla have lost their last two outings
  • They sit 11th in La Liga, and have the 16th-worst home record
  • Atletico Madrid have lost just three away games from 14 this term

That defeat came just two weeks after Barca had also beaten them 4-2 at home in the league. But why am I telling you about Atleti’s recent heartbreak? Well, they currently sit third in La Liga (obviously), and they are four points clear of Athletic Club. They now only have the league to focus on, having been put out of all other competitions by either Barca or Real Madrid, but they are only six points behind Los Blancos in the table, and nine points adrift of league leaders Barca.

They remain one of the best teams in La Liga and there is still a lot up for grabs, especially given the two giants above them have Champions League quarter-finals coming up. I believe they will start to motor in the league and getting wins on the board is all that matters now - up next they travel to Seville next to face Sevilla.

Atleti have only lost three away games in the league, giving them the fourth-strongest away record in terms of points. Meanwhile, Sevilla are struggling to get anything going this term and currently sit in 11th, with nothing to play four. They’ve won just five of their 14 home matches, giving them the 16th-strongest home record in La Liga.

I think this is all set up for Atleti to show their class and bag a comfortable win. Their squad is packed full of attacking talent and the likes of Julian Alvarez and Antoine Griezmann should be able to cause the home side plenty of problems. Sevilla have lost their last two outings, to Real Betis and Athletic Club, and I’m happy to back Atleti to make it three defeats on the spin on Sunday.
