Football Bet of the Day: Sunday selection from Paraguay

We’ve got some big games to look forward to at the Club World Cup on Sunday, but as usual our Football Bet of the Day will focus on games taking place away from the big competitions. Once again, Paraguay’s Division Intermedia has caught my attention, and we’ve got a belting clash coming our way.

It’s third v fourth in a crucial battle to reach the top flight of Paraguayan football on Sunday night as Rubio Nu face Club Tacuray at Estadio La Arboleda (21:30). It’s been a happy hunting ground for the hosts this term as they have won four and drawn two of their six home matches so far.

They’ll hope to keep that unbeaten run going here as they attempt to close the gap on the top two and those all-important promotion places. They currently sit three points off the top of the table, and two points behind Deportivo Capiata who sit in second after 14 games, so promotion is a realistic possibility this season. 

Their opponents Tacuray offer a tough challenge, and harbour promotion ambitions of their own. They are level on points with Rubio Nu despite having only scored two more goals than they have conceded this season, in a strange quirk. 

They have been coming out on the right side of plenty of one-goal matches, and I’m not sure how sustainable that is as the season starts to unfold. Their form is also far better at home, as they have picked up 15 points on home soil, only losing once, compared to the 10 points they have amassed on the road.

I’ve already touched upon Rubio Nu’s strong home form by comparison, and so I think this could be a tough afternoon for Tacuray, especially given Alfredo Valentin Duarte Benitez is suspended having been shown a straight red card in their last match. I’ll back the hosts to find a valuable three points but I will also boost our odds by backing both teams to score on the night. 

Rubio Nu played out a 4-3 thriller with Resistencia in their last match, and would be top of the league had they not drawn seven matches this term. There is loads of quality in this squad, and goals have been easy to come by of late. Both teams have scored in each of their last three matches, while they have now scored 10 goals in their last four fixtures.

Tacuray aren’t quite as greedy, but both teams have now scored in two of their last four matches. As a result, I think we can back them to find the net in this crucial encounter, which could determine which of these teams are true title contenders.
