Football Bet of the Day: Viktor Gyokeres to strike twice

There’s Premier League action coming our way on Monday night in the form of Leicester City vs Newcastle United but as always with our Football Bet of the Day, we will try and look beyond the big English games to find some value. My eye has been caught by a game in the Portuguese Primeira Liga, where title challengers Sporting CP host Braga.
Read on for the Football Bet of the Day for Monday, April 7.

Now full disclosure, I’m writing this before Porto host Benfica on Sunday night. Benfica have been on a sparkling run of form and will take top spot from Sporting if they avoid defeat in that massive clash, heaping the pressure onto Leoes.
But, Sporting have proven themselves to be a determined outfit this term, even after losing manager Ruben Amorim to Manchester United. In fact, Amorim’s direct successor, Joao Pereira, lasted just eight games before he was sacked on Boxing Day - but Rui Borges has got them back on track as we head into the final run-in.
They’ve won their last six games in all competitions, and I think they will be able to get the better of a Braga outfit that has won their last three games and currently sit in fourth. These games at the top can be decided by fine margins - or quality players.
That brings me nicely onto the best player on the pitch, and one of the best strikers in the world right now. Viktor Gyokeres has smashed it for Sporting ever since his £20m move from Coventry City, and having been fortunate enough to watch him wear the sky blue shirt of my own club, I know just how dangerous he can be.
Sporting CP vs Braga Stats
- Sporting have won their last six games in all comps
- Viktor Gyokeres has 44 goals in 44 matches this season
- Gyokeres has scored three braces in his last four league matches
His game has gone up a level since he moved to Portugal and this season he has now scored 44 goals in 44 games in all competitions. He’s clearly too good for the teams that he comes up against in this league, but he also did exceptionally well in the Champions League this term, scoring six goals in eight in Europe.
In current form, he’s smashing it. Eight goals in his last five league matches has taken his total to 30 in 26 league matches this term and is well on track to win his second Golden Boot in a row. Three braces in his last four league matches show what he can do, and I’m backing him to get another double on Monday night.
Everything Sporting does at the top end of the pitch involves him, while the big Swede is also their designated penalty-taker, scoring a wonderful Panenka last time out. You simply cannot argue with the numbers he puts up, and at home I’m more than happy to back him to bag another brace. Gyokeres may be set for a big money move this summer, potentially to the Premier League, but for now we can keep backing him to score goals in Portugal.
