Brighton & Hove Albion (H) to beat Manchester United @ 6/4

Brighton made an excellent start to life under new head coach Fabian Hurzeler last Saturday, beating Everton 3-0 at Goodison Park on the opening weekend of the 2024/25 Premier League season.

Next, the Seagulls host Manchester United at the AMEX Stadium (Saturday, 12:30,) with the Red Devils buoyed by a late 1-0 victory over Fulham at Old Trafford last Friday. It wasn't particularly pretty, but the Red Devils did keep a clean sheet against the Cottagers and deprived them of many real clear-cut chances.

Brighton away represents a much sterner challenge, however.

Everton started brightly against Brighton last weekend but were subsequently blown away by the Seagulls, whose wingers Kaoru Mitoma and Yankuba Minteh tormented the Blues' defence.

Man United went to Brighton on the final day of last season and won 2-0 but nothing was riding on that game for the hosts, who had won just one of their previous nine games with a head coach - Roberto De Zerbi - who appeared to mentally check out of the club months beforehand. Prior to that win, Man Utd had failed to beat Brighton in all five head-to-heads with Erik ten Hag as manager (Brighton won four and the other ended in a draw after 120-plus minutes of action - the Red Devils won on penalties).

It's very early days so it's difficult to be too hard on Ten Hag, but I've not seen anything yet to convince me that Man Utd will be much-improved this season, so until proven otherwise, I have to back teams like Brighton at home against them.

Fulham (H) to beat Leicester City @ 4/5

Fulham will have been disappointed to concede so late on at Old Trafford considering their performance and the fact they won 2-1 at the same venue in February. The Cottagers weren't exactly peppering the United goal but they found themselves in a few promising situations where better execution would have turned them into threatening ones.

Nevertheless, they have the chance to right those wrongs in their next match, which takes place against Leicester City at Craven Cottage on Saturday (15:00).

The Foxes were second-best in the first half of their 1-1 draw with Tottenham Hotspur on Monday but showed resilience to stay in the game and fight to come back and turn things around. Steve Cooper will have been pleased by what he saw in the second 45 minutes, and that should see the East Midlands side head into the weekend with an air of confidence.

However, this is a match Marco Silva will have circled as a must-win for Fulham. There is no great jeopardy for the Cottagers given it is just their second game of the season, but in front of a home crowd, there will be great expectation on them to deliver a win.

With the guile of Emile Smith Rowe, the sheer speed of Adama Traore and the movement of Rodrigo Muniz, Fulham can cause Leicester plenty of problems, and I don't think Cooper's side will be able to hang in for as long as they did on Monday.

Middlesbrough (H) to beat Portsmouth @ 4/9

Middlesbrough got their season off to a superb start by beating Swansea City 1-0 in the Championship's opening weekend before going to Elland Road and thrashing Leeds United 3-0 in the League Cup. However, they were brought back down to earth by Derby County last Saturday as they lost 1-0 at Pride Park.

Their next opponents, Portsmouth, are unbeaten in the league on their long-awaited return from League 1, drawing 3-3 at Leeds before being held to a goalless draw by Luton at Fratton Park.

Pompey earned widespread praise for taking a point from Leeds in a match they very nearly won as well, but while a stalemate against Luton, who performed admirably in the Premier League last season, doesn't appear to be the worst result in the world, the fact they couldn't break down a side who played for over an hour with 10 men - including a substitute goalkeeper - at home, was disappointing.

I like Pompey's chances of staying up and doing relatively well this season, but Boro are a club looking for promotion, and they will be desperate to get back on the winning trail at the Riverside Stadium this Saturday (15:00), which I'm backing them to do.

Borussia Dortmund (H) to beat Eintracht Frankfurt @ 4/6

The Bundesliga returns on Friday but we will have to wait until Saturday evening (17:30) to watch Borussia Dortmund in action, when they host Eintracht Frankfurt at Signal Iduna Park.

Dortmund hold the advantage of having already played a competitive fixture this month after beating Phonix Lubeck in the DFB Pokal last weekend, and coupled with playing at home, look good for a win on Saturday.

The 2024 Champions League finalists have a new head coach in Nuri Sahin, who will be desperate to win his first league game in charge.

Dortmund beat Frankfurt 3-1 at the same venue on March 17 under Edin Terzic and have dominated this fixture in the last 13 years, winning 12 of the 13 games played at Signal Iduna Park. Their only defeat in that period was in April 2021, when no spectators were allowed.

Frankfurt finished sixth last season, just one spot behind Dortmund, but there were 16 points separating the sides, and while Die Adler have made some promising additions to their squad, including the likes of Uzun Can Yilmaz and Arthur Theate, they've also lost Ecuadorian defender Willian Pacho, who moved to French giants Paris Saint-Germain earlier this month.

I'm also impressed by Dortmund's movements in the transfer market, with Serhou Guirassy, Waldemar Anton, Pascal Gross, Yan Couto and Maximilian Beier all joining over the summer.

At home, I think Sahin can get Dortmund off to a flying start in the Bundesliga.

Rotherham United (A) to beat Wycombe Wanderers @ 15/8

It's not been an ideal start to the 2024/25 season for either club, with both winless in their opening two League 1 matches. Rotherham followed up a 1-0 defeat at Exeter City with a goalless draw at home to Bristol Rovers, while Wycombe have been on the wrong end of a 3-2 scoreline against both Wrexham (A) and Birmingham City (H).

Essentially, we have one team - Wycombe - who have had no problems scoring but have been leaky in defence, against another - Rotherham - who have suffered from opposite issues, conceding just once but failing to find the net themselves.

I'm looking to get on the side of Rotherham here while their odds are still kind. The appointment of Steve Evans was hailed as a shrewd one, and while they've begun life back in the third tier poorly, he will surely have the Millers in with a chance of the play-offs at the end of the campaign.
