The EFL swings back into action this weekend with a complete fixture list from League 1 and League 2 giving us plenty of football to enjoy. It also means we have loads to go at for our acca on Saturday, so let’s try to kick the new season off with a winner.

Below you can find my Saturday Football Accumulator Tips for the opening weekend.

Cardiff vs Peterborough BTTS

We should get a cracking game at the Cardiff City Stadium as the hosts look to put the misery of relegation well behind them under their new boss. Brian Barry-Murphy comes in with great reviews having been at Rochdale and most recently Manchester City’s EDS side.

I expect the relentless attacking football we saw at Rochdale to continue here, while his side were also known for leaking plenty of goals. Peterborough could be in for a difficult season and last term their games were chaotic as they scored 68 but conceded a whopping 81 goals in 46 league matches.

Unsurprisingly, 74% of their fixtures featured BTTS and given six of the past seven head-to-heads between these two clubs have seen both score, it’s one I’m happy to add to the acca.

Today's Football Fixtures

Doncaster (H) to beat Exeter

Doncaster Rovers come up to the third tier as champions and Grant McCann is a top-class EFL manager. I think they are in for a successful campaign and they begin their 2025/26 tilt at home to Exeter City (15:00, Sky Sports+).

There have been some summer changes but I do believe that they will pick up where they left off. Donny ended the season with an 11-game unbeaten run to secure the title, while Exeter City are one of the favourites to go down at 7/4 having finished 16th last term. I’ll back the home side to get the job done.

Wigan (H) to beat Northampton

Kevin Nolan came in as Northampton Town manager in December and he faces a big task to keep them in League 1 this season. He’s had a big turnover of players this summer and I’m not sure they will stay in the league, while they begin away at Wigan Athletic (15:00, Sky Sports+).

Ryan Lowe got the fans onside at the end of the last campaign and his summer business has been eye-catching. Paul Mullin has joined along with a few other strikers and I feel that should give the Latics enough firepower to overpower Northampton on the opening weekend.

Walsall (H) to beat Swindon

Walsall were the best team in League 2 for half of last season and despite their collapse, maintained some decent underlying statistics across the entire campaign. They have had a bit of a summer refresh and should be in for another good campaign, as Mat Sadler looks to get his side up and running early on.

Shaking off what happened at the end of the last season is important, but let’s not forget, when the chips were down - they looked as though they had secure promotion on the final day with a win at Crewe, before Antoni Sarcevic’s last-gasp goal sent Bradford up instead. Then, they came again to beat Chesterfield over two legs before AFC Wimbledon did a job on them at Wembley.

Anyway, I fancy them at a decent price to beat a Swindon side (15:00, Sky Sports+) that finished 12th and could offer promise under Ian Holloway, but I need to see them actually offer something before I jump on that particular bandwagon.
