Welcome to the 3-3-3 betting column. Why is it called that? Glad you asked. It's not a formation to play when you've had a man sent off but rather:
3- The number of different selections making up the acca.
3- The number of different (non-English) European Leagues the selections are taken from every week.
3- The minimum odds (3/1) or 4.0 if you prefer, that the acca will come to it every week.
And it really is as simple as that. The selections can be from any betting markets, as long as they meet the criteria set out above. And to round things off, every week I'll leave you with a cool (or at least I think so) bit of trivia involving one of the teams featured in the acca. Simples...
2025-26 season Current P and L: -2
2024-25 season's P and L: +16.9
2-3 again last week but this time it was game over after the first leg, with Mallorca v Celta Vigo ending 1-1, meaning we only got two goals, rather than the three we needed.
Given the second goal of the match was scored quite late on and we can't have too many complaints. That bet was always going to be the tricky one at a bigger price of 11/8, but we felt it was worth the gamble. Elsewhere, Napoli won comfortably 2-0 and Benfica also won to nil (3-0) so a shame about that Mallorca match, but on we go.
- Napoli v Cagliari
- Saturday August 31 19:45
- Selection: Napoli to win and over 1.5 goals @ 4/7
Napoli delivered for us las week and we're going to the well with them again.
They host Cagliari this week, who finished down in 15th last season whereas Napoli won Serie A last time out, of course.
A good starting point for our selection is that 79% of Napoli's home matches had over 1.5 goals in them last season. That included a 2-0 win over these very opponents last season on the last day, crucial in them clinching the title. A repeat of that very result would be no surprise, though Napoli have the potential to score more. But that 2-0 would do us just fine.
- Sunday August 31 16:15
- Le Havre v Nice
- Selection: Over 2.5 goals @ 10/11
The Betfred odds-compilers are making this a 50/50 affair when it comes to the over/under 2.5 goals market, minus the house edge of course, so you can take 10/11 whether you're going 'unders' or 'overs'; but the strong preference is for the latter.
Le Havre had an excellent 70% strike rate for over 2.5 goals matches at home last season and even their away record was decent for overs matches at 52%. Their two matches this season have produced two overs affairs after a 3-1 defeat at Monaco and a 2-1 home loss to Lens, so their tendency for games with goals has carried onto this season.
As for Nice, their record for games with three or more goals in them last season stood at an impressive 64.7% away from home and they're one from two on 'overs' this season. Considering that in three of the last four matches between them there were over 2.5 goals, and you can see our preference for it.
- Sunday August 31 18:30
- Alverca v Benfica
- Selection: Benfica to win and over 1.5 goals @ 4/11
Benfica games have been a good source of winners for us this season with successful bets in their Champions League qualifying matches against Nice and Fenerbahçe and two wins from two here in the 3-3-3 column, though as we know, other results let us down.
They travel to Alverca this week, a newly-promoted team who have so far lost two and drawn one, suggesting this season could be a struggle for them.
Benfica will be feeling good about life right now with a Champions League Group stages spot guaranteed and three wins from three in the league. They may be a bit fatigued from their midweek efforts but that shouldn't stop them from making it four from four in the league. This is unlikely to be 1-0 given the guilty in quality, so a Benfica win with two or more goals in the game looks the way to go.
James' Fun Fact
This is the first time Alverca are in the top division in Portuguese football since the 2003-4 season. They may not be a particularly well-known club, but you'll certainly know about one of their 'alumni'. Five years before their relegation the great Deco - formerly of Porto, Chelsea and Barcelona among others- featured for them on loan from Benfica before a controversial move to Porto, where his career really took off.
