Flamengo vs ES Tunis Prediction: Brazilian side can bring the flair

Flamengo and ES Tunis join the party in Group D in the early hours of Tuesday morning as they face off against each other in Philadelphia (02:00, DAZN). With Chelsea and Los Angeles also in this group, these two will fancy their chances of progressing, with the Brazilians fancied in some quarters to do well.

Filipe Luis has a fantastic squad to choose from, with Giorgian de Arrascaete the beating heart of the team. He’s already registered 13 goal involvements this term, in just nine matches - but the remarkable stat is that he has scored with nine of his 10 attempts on target. 

Brazilian striker Pedro will be the man to watch out for up top, while midfielder Gerson is on his farewell tour - set to join Zenit after this tournament. Evertton Araujo is just 22 and should partner him, although Jorginho - yep that one - has just arrived to compete for a spot in the middle of the park. 

Gonzalo Plata has been passed fit to partake in this opener and with Danilo and Alex Sandro in the full-back positions, there is now plenty of experience in this Flamengo squad, so I’m really excited to see them in action.

ES Tunis manager Les Sang et Or will be delighted to welcome back Yassine Meriah, after he recently ended his six-month absence. Meriah is the captain and the leader of the defence, so his knee injury has truly impacted the Tunisian outfit. 

He will be back to feature here, while Youcef Belalli is a dangerous forward. 15 goal involvements in the Tunisian top division is impressive, but it is arguably his performances in the CAF Champions League that have caught the eye as he bagged seven goals and eight assists in just 10 appearances. 

Yan Sasse is of Brazilian origin and will play against some of his compatriots, while the brilliantly named Rodrigo Rodrigues may lead the line.

Flamengo vs ES Tunis Odds

Flamengo are the big favourites to win this one at 2/5, giving them an implied win probability of 71%. ES Tunis, or Esperance Sportive de Tunis, are 17/2 for the victory, while a draw can be backed at 18/5.

Over 2.5 goals is 4/5, BTTS is 11/10 and Pedro is the favourite to score first at 3/1.

Price Boost - Flamengo to win both halves @ 9/4

This is a decent price given I believe Flamengo are in with a chance of being the dark horses of this competition. They are the highest-ranked team taking part in this competition outside of Europe, and while Tunis have won the league and cup this term, they haven’t faced a team like the Brazilians in that time. 

I also believe that this game will contain a fair few goals, contrary to popular belief, so I think the value on offer for Flamengo to win both halves is worth backing. Their attacking strength is impressive, and I don’t think ES Tunis will be able to handle it on the night.

I don’t usually do this sort of thing, but I think we could see an open game in Philadelphia with plenty of goals. Also, we are in a scenario where we have three quality goalscorers on show, so it makes sense to me to back them all to find the net - rather than simply backing both teams to score. 

For Flamengo, De Arrascaeta and Pedro are two quality attackers, with fantastic records. De Arrascaete has remarkably scored nine of his last 10 shots on target and has nine goals in nine Serie A matches this term, while Pedro has four in eight. Meanwhile Belalli scored seven goals in 10 CAF Champions League matches and is the most likely ES Tunis player to find the net. 

It’s a big price, but if the goals start flying in, we could be onto a winner.
