Fifa world cup 1 scaled

We are around seven months out from the 2026 Fifa World Cup which takes place across the USA, Canada and Mexico. The new format of football's biggest spectacle will see the number of teams competing at the finals expand to 48.

Of those slots, 28 have already been taken and 14 more will be decided over the course of the international break between November 13 and 18. Below is a run-down of the 28 teams to have booked their places at the 2026 World Cup so far.

2026 World Cup Odds (Teams Who Have Qualified)

Concacaf (3 qualified/6 spots)

As the host nations, USA, Canada and Mexico were all guaranteed places at the finals tournament. USA will look to build on their run to the round of 16 in Qatar in 2022. With Mauricio Pochettino at the helm of a squad starring the likes of Christian Pulisic, Gio Reyna and Timothy Weah, there is a belief that the Stars and Stripes can accomplish something next summer.

Canada will be competing in a second successive finals competition for the first time ever, having only previously reached this stage in 2022 and 1986. They were winless in both of those campaigns and the Canucks will hope that being on home turf can help turn their fortunes around.

It will be the third time that Mexico has played host to the World Cup, following 1970 and 1986, meaning El Tri have staged the event more times than any other country. In his third spell in charge, Javier Aguirre will be aiming to at least match the quarter-final runs his country enjoyed in their previous two World Cups on home soil.

Concacaf (0/3)

The three hosts will be joined by three fellow Concacaf nations, with Surinam, Jamaica and Honduras currently leading the third-round groups which will each send another team straight into the finals.

Football Odds

AFC (8/8)

Australia

Australia are booked in for their sixth consecutive World Cup finals appearance after securing a comeback victory against Saudi Arabia in June to secure their place. It was the first time since 2014 that the Socceroos secured direct qualification.

Iran

Iran have made it to their fourth consecutive World Cup finals, having booked their place as winners of Group A in the third stage of qualifying. They ended up two points above fellow-qualifiers Uzbekistan and eight clear of the chasing pack.

Japan

Japan got the job done with three games to spare, and they are now heading to their eighth successive finals. The Samurai Blue have reached the round of 16 in back-to-back editions.

Jordan

One of three confirmed debutants, Jordan qualified for their first World Cup at the 11th time of asking. They booked their place in June by defeating Oman 3-0 in Muscat. That, combined with Iraq's defeat to South Korea, saw them finish in the second qualifying spot in Group B.

Qatar

Having become the first host nation ever to exit a World Cup without registering a point, Qatar are through to the 2026 event after finishing top of a three-team fourth-round group in qualifying. A 2-1 victory over United Arab Emirates in October saw them through following an earlier 0-0 draw with Oman.

Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia caused shockwaves in beating eventual champions Argentina at Qatar 2022, and the Green Falcons are back for more having seen off Iraq and Indonesia in a three-team fourth round pool. Their previous best in the finals was a round-of-16 run at USA 1994.

South Korea

South Korea went unbeaten in two group phases to qualifying with ease for the 2026 World Cup, scoring 40 goals in their 16 total games. Famously, they were semi-finalists on home soil in 2002, knocking out Italy and Spain in controversial circumstances along the way.

Uzbekistan

Uzbekistan reached their first World Cup after securing a top-two finish in the third round of Asian qualifying in June. Manchester City's Abdukodir Khusanov will be hoping to be one of the lucky 26 players to represent the White Wolves on the biggest of stages.

World Cup Odds

Caf (9/9)

Algeria

The Desert Foxes return to this stage for the first time since 2014 after finishing top of Group G in African qualifying, seven points clear of Uganda and Mozambique. They have only once gone beyond the group stage in four previous attempts (2014).

Cape Verde

The Blue Sharks have made history by qualifying for their first-ever World Cup finals. They topped Group D after being pushed all the way by Cameroon. A country with a population of just over 500,000 people, Cape Verde are the second-least populous nation to reach the finals, after Iceland at Russia 2018.

Ivory Coast

The Elephants secured their place at the World Cup in October with a 3-0 victory over Kenya in their final Group F fixture, ensuring they topped the section ahead of Gabon. This will be the Ivory Coast's first participation since three consecutive group-stage exits between 2006 and 2014.

Egypt

After missing out on Qatar 2022, Egypt qualified for a fourth appearance at the World Cup finals with a game t0 spare. They won Group A by five points, giving Liverpool star Mohamed Salah a second appearance on the greatest international stage.

Ghana

Ghana will be making a fifth appearance at the World Cup finals in six attempts, having made their debut at Germany 2006. They will look to improve on their performance in Qatar four years ago when they were eliminated in the group stage. The Black Stars secured their place thanks to their 1-0 victory over Comoros in October to seal top spot in Group I.

Morocco

The Atlas Lions went on a historic run to the semi-finals in Qatar 2022. They were also the first side from the Mother Continent to qualify for the 2026 edition thanks to a 5-0 triumph over Niger in September, eventually going on to win all eight preliminary games by an aggregate of 22-2.

Senegal

The Lions of Teranga qualified for the showpiece after securing first place in Group B of the African preliminaries with a 4-0 victory over Mauritania in their final fixture in October which ensured they topped the section ahead of Congo DR. It will be their fourth World Cup appearance, with their best return to date being a run to the quarter-finals in 2002 before being eliminated by Turkey.

South Africa

Everyone remembers the vibes and the history that came with the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. With Vuvuzelas, K'naan and Shakira, it was such a special event. Sixteen years after their World Cup finals debut, Bafana Bafana are back on the biggest stage of all, having edged out Nigeria and Benin by a point each to top Group C of qualifying.

Tunisia

The Carthage Eagles booked their place in North America with two games to spare in Group H thanks to a dramatic last-gasp win away to Equatorial Guinea in Malabo, with their defence having kept clean sheets in their first eight Caf qualifying matches. They have yet to get out of the group stages in their six World Cup appearances to date.

Conmebol (6/6)

Argentina

The reigning world champions were the first Conmebol team to qualify. They secured their spot in March following Bolivia's goalless draw with Uruguay. That result meant Argentina were guaranteed to finish in one of South America's six automatic World Cup qualification spots, and they went on to top the pool by a phenomenal nine-point margin.

Brazil

New coach Carlo Ancelotti led Brazil to a 1-0 win over Paraguay in June to book their spot at next summer's finals. That will maintain the nation's perfect record of having featured at every edition of the World Cup, but their only run to the semi-finals in the last five attempts saw them infamously hammered 7-1 by Germany in Belo Horizonte in 2014.

Colombia

After missing out on Qatar 2022, Colombia are back in the World Cup. Captain James Rodriguez, who was arguably the face of the 2014 edition, led his side to a 3-0 triumph over Bolivia in September to book their spot. They ended up third in qualifying, eight points ahead of seventh in a pool from which six qualified automatically.

Ecuador

A 0-0 stalemate against Peru in Lima on June 10 assured Ecuador of qualification with two matches to spare. It will be the fifth appearance at the World Cup finals this century for El Tricolor, who ended up in second spot in the Conmebol group. Their only appearance beyond the group stage was won by a David Beckham free-kick in 2006 as England progressed to the quarter-finals.

Paraguay

Paraguay will participate in the World Cup for the first time since 2010 after securing their place with a 0-0 draw at home against Ecuador on September 4. The Albirroja were the lowest-ranked automatic qualifiers in South America, finishing sixth in the 10-team group. Only in 2002 have they ever reached the quarter-finals of any World Cup.

OFC (1/1)

New Zealand

New Zealand sealed their spot at the 2026 World Cup by overcoming New Caledonia 3-0 in the OFC qualifying final. The All Whites will compete at the tournament for the third time, having previously qualified for the 1982 and 2010 editions. They were, curiously, the only unbeaten team at their last tournament appearance in South Africa, drawing all three of their Group F matches.

Uefa (1/12)

England

The Three Lions booked their place at an eighth successive World Cup when Thomas Tuchel's side eased through the UEFA preliminaries and qualified with two games to spare. A 5-0 victory over Latvia in Riga in October got the job done. This will be their first time competing on American soil after they infamously missed out on USA 1994.

A further 11 European qualifiers will be confirmed in the coming week, with France, Spain, Portugal and Netherlands among those currently leading their qualification groups.

Play-offs (0/6)

The final six spots at the World Cup will be determined in March, with a six-team intercontinental play-off tournament taking part in the same week as Uefa deciders which will be drawn up depending in part on Nations League progress.
