This is certainly a baptism of fire for the Blue Sharks as they take on the reigning European champions and World Cup favourites. Spain have been almost unstoppable in international football over the past few years.

Not since March 2023, when they were beaten by a Scott McTominay brace in Glasgow, have La Roja lost a competitive match in regulation time. Aside from a penalty shootout failure against Portugal in the Nations League final, there is barely a blot on their recent international record.

Luis de la Fuente deserves plenty of credit for that. He was seen as a slightly underwhelming appointment by many when he took the job in 2022. However, he has now firmly silenced his doubters by replicating the success he managed at youth level with the senior side.

Spain were the class act at Euro 2024. Despite a tough knockout path, they saw off Germany, France and England to lift the trophy. It was De la Fuente’s decision to start both Nico Williams and Lamine Yamal at that tournament which helped transform them from the steady, possession-based side of the previous years into something much more exciting.

The team has evolved slightly since their successful trip to Germany. Mikel Oyarzabal has replaced Álvaro Morata as the main striker, while Aymeric Laporte is the only centre-back in this World Cup squad that also featured two summers ago.

Cape Verde will clearly be up against it in their opening fixture, but they will believe they have a chance of progress from a group that also contains Saudi Arabia and Uruguay.

They became the smallest nation by size, and second-smallest by population, to qualify for the World Cup last autumn. However, Curaçao went on to break both records only a few weeks later.

There are few outright stars in Bubista’s squad. Villarreal’s Logan Costa will be one recognisable face for the Spanish players, but he barely featured in an injury-ravaged club campaign. Rotterdam-born Jamiro Monteiro is a key figure in midfield, but overall their hopes of being competitive in North America will depend on the team unit, rather than any one individual.

Cape Verde’s results over the past 18 months suggest it would be foolish to completely write them off. They finished four points clear of World Cup regulars Cameroon in their qualifying group, with forward Dailon Livramento netting the only goal in a decisive 1-0 victory over the Indomitable Lions last September.

The islanders also saw off Serbia 3-0 in a friendly during the buildup to this competition. They rounded off their preparations with another 3-0 win against Bermuda.

Spain vs Cape Verde Odds

Spain are 1/10 favourites in what, on paper, stands out as one of the biggest mismatches of the 2026 World Cup group stage. You can back the draw at 10/1, while Cape Verde are 20/1 to pull off one of the greatest upsets the competition will have ever seen.

If you’re expecting the European champions to make an early statement, Spain -3 handicap is priced at 15/8. They are also given a 4/5 chance of winning both halves.

Alternatively, you can back Cape Verde or Draw at 7/4 in the First-half Double Chance market. The underdogs are on offer at 11/8 to score over 0.5 goals across the 90 minutes.

There could be plenty of changes from Spain in the second half of this match, with so much quality on the bench. Anytime goalscorer options include Oyarzabal at 4/9, Ferran Torres at 8/13, and Pedri at 16/5, using Sub Switch.

Livramento is priced at 15/2 in the same market for the debutants, while Cape Verde are available at 8/15 to have over 1.5 shots on target.

Team News

Spain head into this World Cup with fitness doubts over both Yamal and Williams. Neither played in the final warm-up game, a 3-1 win over Peru, but they are expected to be part of the matchday squad in Atlanta. Yamal stands a better chance of making the starting lineup, but De la Fuente could opt to hold back the 18-year-old, who hasn’t played any football since April due to a hamstring injury.

Newcastle target Víctor Muñoz is the only other fitness doubt. The Spain boss looks likely to keep faith with Unai Simón in goal, despite fierce competition from David Raya and Joan Garcia. Oyarzabal will lead the line.

Cape Verde are expected to set up with a 4-2-3-1 system, with Livramento and veteran forward Nuno da Costa battling for a starting role up front. They don’t have any major fitness concerns heading into their World Cup debut.

Ordinarily, they favour a possession-based style, but their long-serving coach may need to tweak that slightly against Spain. Bubista will be hoping his team can have some joy when breaking on the flanks, particularly with captain Ryan Mendes on the right wing.

Spain to win, Spain most corners & Cape Verde most cards @ 5/6

Spain may take a few games to hit top gear at this World Cup, given both Williams and Yamal are short on match fitness. However, that shouldn’t be a major problem in a weak group, and the gulf in quality suggests there is only one likely outcome here, even if La Roja don’t produce their best football.

Cape Verde will need to work incredibly hard off the ball, and there is a risk their card count could rise as they begin to tire and make more mistimed challenges. De la Fuente will be eager for his players to avoid any unnecessary bookings, particularly if his side works up an early lead.

The European champions have won the corner count in each of their previous eight matches, and I’m using one of Betfred's pre-made Bet Builders to back Spain to win and have the most corners, with Cape Verde collecting the most cards.

Fabian Ruiz to score or assist (Sub Switch) @ 11/10

One of the most overlooked players in this Spanish side is Fabian Ruiz. The PSG man frequently has a big impact for his country, and he registered two goals and two assists in an outstanding Euro 2024 campaign.

With Rodri set to play the holding role, Fabian will have plenty of freedom to get forward and make runs into attacking areas where he can have a major impact on this game. If he’s taken off in the second half, his most likely replacement is Mikel Merino, who netted six times in six appearances during World Cup qualifying.

Given that, I’m backing him to score or assist.

Thanks to Betfred's new Sub Switch promo, if your chosen player is substituted at any point in the match, your selection is switched to his replacement.

Spain vs Cape Verde Score Prediction

  • Spain 2-0 Cape Verde

With Yamal not ready to play the full 90 minutes, and a few other players short on match sharpness, I’m expecting a solid rather than spectacular start from Spain. They’ve not been at their best in recent outings, scoring only four goals across their last three internationals against Egypt, Iraq and Peru.

Cape Verde’s priority will be to avoid the kind of heavy defeat that would do great damage to their goal difference. Given that, there’s little chance of them folding completely, even if they fall two behind. Bubista’s team have only lost one of their 10 matches during the 2025/26 season. I can see them competing reasonably well in this fixture, and restricting Spain to a two-goal victory.
