Austria got their World Cup qualifying campaign off to a bright start with a victory over Romania on Saturday. Up next for them is a tussle with San Marino in Serravalle on Tuesday (19:45). Das Team will have the opportunity to move up to second with a victory and if other results go their way, while they will still boast games in hand on their rivals in Group H.

Below you will find my San Marino vs Austria predictions, supported by the latest team news and match odds.

Team News

Matteo Valli Casadei is likely going to push for a starting spot in the midfield for San Marino after featuring as a half-time substitute against Bosnia-Herzegovina.

In defence, boss Roberto Cevoli is likely to keep faith with a back four of Filippo Fabbri, Michele Cevoli, Tommaso Benvenuti and Alberto Riccardi.

Nicola Nanni is expected to lead the line for San Marino, having amassed three goals for his country already.

San Marino vs Austria Stats

  • San Marino have lost three games in a row
  • They failed to score in two of them
  • Michael Gregoritsch (AUT) has four goals in his last six international appearances

Austria are coping without their captain David Alaba, who is out with a long-term meniscus injury which he suffered with Real Madrid in April.

Gernot Trauner is back available for selection after he served his one-match ban for the red card he received in March's Uefa Nations League play-off against Serbia.

A place on the bench may await Trauner as Ralf Rangnick could be tempted to stick with the same side that defeated Romania last time out.

Forward Michael Gregoritsch is in great form for Das Team, having scored in four of his last six appearances across all competitions. He is set to lead the line again, supported by Marcel Sabitzer and Christoph Baumgartner.

San Marino vs Austria Odds

San Marino are 66/1 to win this clash, which is down to their poor record on the international stage, as well as the fact that they are up against the 22nd-ranked team in the world.

The draw is marketed at 20/1 and Austria have drawn two of their past four encounters. Das Team are 1/80 to collect the three points so you will find better value in backing them to win with a -3 handicap at 7/10 - which has an implied probability of 58.8%.

Austria are 1/4 to keep a clean sheet, with San Marino blanking in two of their previous three fixtures.

Austria to win 4-0 @ 9/2

Austria have games in hand in Group H but they started their campaign strongly by beating Romania, who will be tussling with them and Bosnia for the top two spots in the table.

The Tricolorii are a much tougher opponent than San Marino, and Austria came through that challenge so I predict this should be a routine exercise for Rangnick's men.

Das Team have a lot of attacking quality within their ranks, notably Gregoritsch, Baumgartner, Sabitzer and Marko Arnautovic, and all of them could be in for a profitable evening inside the San Marino Stadium on Tuesday.

The hosts will be pleased that they were able to keep their defeat to Bosnia down to one goal, but I think it will be very tough for them to repeat that feat against Austria. The visitors may be given the benefit of facing some tired legs in the San Marino ranks following their run-out at the weekend, and this could lead to a few goals for the Burschen.

Seeing as there is little value to be had in backing Austria to win straight up, I've gone for a correct score and 4-0 jumps out at me given the quality Rangnick has at his disposal.

San Marino vs Austria - Correct Score Austria 4-0

Michael Gregoritsch anytime goalscorer @ 4/9

Gregoritsch is Austria's man in form right now and he is making the centre-forward role his own. The SC Freiburg striker has scored four goals in his last six outings across all competitions for Das Team, with his latest coming against Romania last time out on Saturday.

He's playing with great confidence and at 31, appears to be in the best form of his international career. He now has 20 goals across 65 appearances, and he should be sensing an opportunity to improve his ratio against the minnows of San Marino.

Gregoritsch is going to prove a nuisance to the hosts' defence and I don't think they will be able to keep him quiet for the duration of the match. I'm expecting him to get on the scoresheet at least once here, but I wouldn't be surprised to see him end up with a brace or even a hat-trick.
