Lithuania vs Poland Prediction: 22/1 Scorecast worth a shot

Lithuania’s outside chance of reaching their first World Cup in their history has already evaporated, and as they prepare to face Poland on Sunday (19:45), they are simply playing for pride. Poland meanwhile, have it all on the line, as they sit second on 10 points, currently occupying the play-off position behind the Netherlands.

Team News

Captain Robert Lewandowski will once again lead the line for Poland, having scored a remarkable 86 goals in 160 international matches. Poland beat New Zealand 1-0 in a friendly last time out, with Piotr Zielinski scoring the only goal of the game. He’s likely to start again as vice-captain while manager Jan Urban is likely to deploy Poland’s traditional 4-4-2.

Jakub Kaminski could once again start with Lewandowski in an attacking role having scored in the win over Finland. Matty Cash and Jan Bednarek should both feature in the back four, with Arsenal man Jakub Kiwior, on loan at FC Porto, likely to play at left-back.

Lithuania lost 2-1 to Finland last time out but are likely to name a similar XI here, although Edgaras Jankauskas is going to be forced into one change as Arthur Dolznikov is suspended. As a result, there’s a chance that Fedor Cernych could equal Lithuania’s all-time appearance record if he replaces Dolznikov. 

Gytis Paulauskas should play up top with Gvidas Gineitis set to play in midfield having got four goal contributions in Group G so far.

Lithuania are the outsiders here at 11/2 while Poland are the 2/5 favourites - giving them an implied win probability of 71%. A draw is 10/3 which would be an impressive result for the hosts. 

Over 1.5 goals is 4/11, BTTS is 11/8 and Lewandowski is 2/1 to open the scoring.

Poland -1 @ 5/4

Poland are a decent outfit, having won three of their five qualifiers so far, while Lithuania cannot qualify for the World Cup - no matter what they do from here. There’s a clear difference between these two teams, as we saw by their results against Finland. 

Poland secured a 3-1 victory in their last qualifier, while Lithuania lost 2-1 against the same opponents on Thursday. With Lewandowski leading the line and Poland in desperate need of all three points, I think they will get a comfortable away win. 

World Cup Odds

Scorecast - Lewandowski to score first, Poland to win 3-0 @ 22/1

I think we are in a strong position for a scorecast here for a couple of reasons. First of all, I think this is very likely to be a Poland win to nil, given their reasonable defensive record (four goals conceded in five games) and Lithuania’s lack of points in the group. 

If that is the case, I think a 3-0 Poland win is the most likely outcome, and obviously Lewandowski is the prime candidate to open the scoring. The Barcelona man remains one of the best strikers in the world and has already scored four La Liga goals in seven appearances this term. 

He’s scored 69 more international goals than any other member of this Poland squad, so I think this long shot is worth a small stake.
