Cape Verde World Cup 2026: Creoles unlikely to be kings for even one day

An expanded 48-team World Cup brings with it that little bit more of pretty much everything. Teams of Cape Verde’s ilk seem primed to offer little more than a warm-up opponent for those with even moderate aspirations.

Below are my Cape Verde World Cup 2026 predictions, including an assessment of their squad and chances of winning the competition.

Cape Verde reached their first World Cup with far more aplomb than many of the other competing nations, recovering from a slow start to top a qualifying group including Cameroon, Libya and Angola.

Following a 4-1 loss to the Indomitable Lions in Yaounde, Bubista’s troops had gained just four points from their opening three games.

But their response was emphatic, winning six and drawing the other of their remaining seven matches to beat Cameroon to the automatic spot from CAF Group D by four points.

Now that they face the reality of World Cup finals football, though, one has to wonder just what they can offer on the sport’s greatest stage.

They were built on defensive solidity in qualifying, keeping clean sheets in all five home fixtures in Praia. Yet it will surely take more than off-the-ball structure to make a dent against Spain and Colombia in particular.

World Cup Odds

So the real question is whether they can keep things close enough in their first two games to leave them in with a shout of progression when they come to meet Saudi Arabia in their final Group H clash.

Head coach Bubista has plenty of credit in the bank, and not just due to their qualification exploits.

The former Creoles skipper is just three years removed from leading his nation to the best AFCON run in their history, topping Group B and then beating Mauritania before falling in the quarter-finals only after a chaotic 2-1 penalty shoot-out loss to South Africa.

There is tournament experience there then, but make no mistake about the fact they would need two – possibly even three – of the greatest performances in their country’s history to have any hope of making it to the knockouts.

Player to watch: Ryan Mendes

Nottingham Forest fans with long memories might just about remember Ryan Mendes.

The winger started 26 games for the Tricky Trees back in 2015/16 under the leadership of Dougie Freedman during the club’s long, arduous slog back towards the Premier League.

Since then, Mendes has lived out a fruitful career across a couple of spells in Turkey either side of a two-club stint in the UAE.

Now with second-tier Turkish side Igdir, at the age of 36 he has earned the right to captain Cape Verde to their first-ever World Cup off the back of a 97-cap international career which has seen him also take the honours as the Creoles’ greatest scorer ever with 22 goals.

Could he crown a 100th cap with a World Cup win against Saudi Arabia on 25 June? It would be the stuff of which fairy tales are made.

Football Odds

Prediction: Bottom of Group H

It’s easy to get romantic about the recent run of Cape Verde, and they have definitely earned the right to be taken seriously given what Bubista has achieved with them.

But a simple glance at their squad lays bare the reality, with very few of their players offering anything close to the kind of top-flight quality that generally shines through at World Cups.

Midfielder Deroy Duarte’s 45 appearances for Ludogorets between the Bulgarian First League and Champions League are about the greatest boast of high-level consistency over the past year.

As such, even Saudi Arabia should have enough over 90 minutes to deal capably with the Creoles and ensure that it's memories more than points that they'll be taking back home with them.
