First team to Score - Canada

I’m expecting a low-scoring encounter in Toronto but this is Canada’s best chance to ever progress past the group stages at the World Cup and what an occasion it will be.

It would surprise no-one if they come out in a high press with put in a real shift early, backed by their fans at BMO Field in Toronto.

The Canadians have only ever scored twice at a World Cup (and one of those was an own-goal) but this is a great chance for them to do so again. I like them to take the lead and grab the opening goal based on the emotion of the game that’ll engulf the whole team and fans.

Nikola Katic 2+ Fouls Committed

Next up we move on to the Schalke 04 centre-back who has shown in big matches, he’s willing to break up play and take one for the team as it were.

In the qualifying play-offs, he committed four fouls against Wales and then when they had to face Italy for a World Cup spot, the referee blew three times to award a free kick against the Bosnian defender.

The only game they lost in their whole campaign to get to the Finals was against Austria and in that one, he was once more penalised on three occasions. It will be a raucous atmosphere on Friday and Canada will be willed on by their home support, I can certainly see the 29-year-old giving away two or more free kicks should he start.

Jonathan David 1+ Fouls Committed

The Juventus’ striker isn’t considered dirty by any means but there is little doubt referees are going to be calling it tight in the early stages of the World Cup.

Having committed nine fouls in ten matches across the Copa América and Gold Cup, the 26-year-old is a decent punt and one of the longer shots to at least commit one foul in Canada’s opening match.

Ismael Kone to be booked

Having by-passed the qualification process due to the fact Canada are a host nation, competitive matches have been few and far between for Jesse Marsch and his squad in recent times.

If we go back to 2024 however, they got all the way to the third/fourth place play-off in the Copa América. In that tournament, midfielder Ismael Kone started four matches and saw yellow three times.

The 23-year-old isn’t known as a player with a bad disciplinary history and only got booked four times in Serie A this season for Sassuolo. That Copa América run though was stark and getting him at 21/5 to grab a yellow feels like a decent punt knowing his recent history in competitive matches for his country.

It should be noted that he missed training on Wednesday with a fever, so one to watch before placing this Bet Builder to see if he’s recovered enough to start.
