Mamelodi Sundowns vs Borussia Dortmund Prediction: Guirassy backed again

The TQL Stadium in Cincinnati will see Mamelodi Sundowns take on Borussia Dortmund on Saturday (17:00 BST, DAZN). Having secured a win in their first match, the South African outfit could book their place in the knockout stages with another shock victory.

Team News

We could see an unchanged XI from Mamelodi Sundowns after their 1-0 win over Ulsan HD as captain Themba Zwane made his long-awaited return to the starting line-up. The 35-year-old wide man took the armband back from goalkeeper Ronwen Williams, who will be delighted with the clean sheet he kept behind a solid back four. 

We can expect Divine Lunga to play at left-back after a standout display, alongside Keanu Cupido, Grant Kekana and Khuliso Mudau in defence. Top scorer Iqraam Rayners scored the only goal against Ulsan and will lead the line again, with Arthur Sales likely to play in the number 10 role behind him.

Football Odds

Jobe Bellingham made his Dortmund debut off the bench against Fluminense, and he could come into the XI for this match. Felix Nmecha may also be given a start, along with Carney Chukwemeka, who is on loan from Chelsea.

There may be a case for Jamie Gittens to join the Blues after this competition, so perhaps Chukwemeka will be used as a makeweight in the transfer. Julian Brandt captained the side and should start with Serhou Guirassy and Karim Adeyemi as part of the front three, while Nico Schlotterbeck and Emre Can remain out.

Mamelodi Sundowns have been priced up at 7/1 to win this game, while a draw is backable at 7/2. Borussia Dortmund are the favourites to win this game at 1/3, giving them an implied win probability of 75% for this second group game.

Borussia Dortmund to win to nil @ 6/5

Although they were pretty disappointing in that draw with Fluminense, I do believe that Borussia Dortmund will get the job done relatively comfortably against the South African outfit. Sundowns did well to edge a tight encounter with Ulsan, and I do think Rayners poses a goal threat, but Dortmund have so much quality that they should be able to secure three points in Cincinnati. 

Today's Football Fixtures

Nico Kovac will make changes for this one in an attempt to improve upon the 0.24 xG they managed to create against Fluminense, while I think the attacking trio have more than enough to take Sundowns apart given they should see more of the ball. Sundowns only had two shots on target against Ulsan, so Dortmund’s back three that have kept three clean sheets in their last four matches should be able to keep them at bay, and win to nil.

Serhou Guirassy to score anytime @ 4/5 

Guirassy has scored seven in his last seven appearances, with the Brazilans the only team to have kept him out bay in recent times. He ended the Bundesliga season with 21 goals in 30 games, racking up 34 in all competitions. 

The 29-year-old is bound to cause Sundowns trouble, and even though he is a short price, I think it’s worth backing him to find the net during the 90 minutes. Dortmund should be able to dominate this fixture, and I’m expecting a comfortable win for the Germans, with Guirassy getting on the scoresheet.
