Inter Milan vs Fluminense Bet Builder Tips: 7/1 shot for European success

Inter Milan to win

Having been relatively impressed with Fluminense this tournament, I was considering backing a draw or even a win for the underdogs. But when it comes down to it, I just think Inter will be too strong on the night. 

Chivu has received a couple of big injury boosts, as Davide Frattesi and Marcus Thuram returned to individual training. They may be able to feature on the bench, while key man Denzel Dumfries was able to start in the final group game. 

Their underlying data has been excellent in the group stage, while Fluminense disappointingly drew 0-0 with Mamelodi Sundowns, when top spot was on the line. If they had conceded in the final group match, they would have been out of the competition, and while their 0-0 with Dortmund was a decent result, I think they wil be knocked out by European opposition here.

Inter Milan over 1.5 goals

With the managerial change, I think a lot of people are overlooking Inter - but this is the same group of players that beat Barcelona over two legs to reach the Champions League final. I think they could be dark horses in this competition, and their xG data in the group stage was excellent, despite missing Thuram. 

Now he is on his way back, they could be far more efficient in front of goal. They created an xG of over two in each of their three group matches, notching 2.68 v Monterrey, 2.32 v Urawa Reds and 2.22 v River Plate. That shows a creative team that is only getting stronger, while Fluminense created an xG of less than one in two of their three group fixtures - drawing a blank twice. I think Inter should be able to win this game comfortably.

Denzel Dumfries to score 

To boost our odds, I’m backing Inter’s right wing-back to find the net. He may not seem like a usual selection, but he provides excellent value in my eyes. Given Thuram is not fully fit and Lautaro Martinez a short price to find the net, I do think Dumfries is the next-best option. 

He might be a right wing-back, but he is one of the most attacking defenders you will find anywhere in the world. Often crashing into the box or making driving runs, I’m not sure there’s many full-backs better than Dumfries on the planet, and now he’s back fit, I think goals are on the way. 

He’s scored 14 goals in 51 appearances for club and country this term, including seven across 29 Serie A matches. He averaged 0.84 shots on target per 90, and up against a team that Inter should be able to dominate, I expect him to find the net.
