Ferencvaros vs Viktoria Plzen Prediction: Varga the danger

“Thursday night, are Europa nights” - that famous TNT Sport classic lives long in the memory, and we are hoping for another classic season for this competition that is gaining in prestige with every passing year. Tottenham Hostpur are the reigning champions and now playing in the Championship League, so the door is open for a brand-new winner this term.

Barnabas Varga is certain to lead the line for the hosts after his phenomenal start to the season (more on that shortly), and he was partnered by Nigerian striker Bamidele Yusuf last time out but could play alongside Lenny Joseph on Thursday.

Former Liverpool midfielder Naby Keita is likely to patrol the midfield for Robbie Keane’s hosts, with Jonathan Levi competing for a place in midfield alongside him and Gavriel Kanichowsky. The 3-4-1-2 system should stay, with former Cardiff man Callum O’Dowda set to play on the left and experienced goalkeeper Denes Dibusz targeting another clean sheet.

For the visitors, former Burnley and Watford striker Matej Vydra will feature despite being sent off against Sparta Prague in their last league fixture. He’s available for this one and has scored six goals in nine in the league this term, and should play behind Ghana’s Prince Kwabena Adu and Nigeria’s Rafiu Durosinmi.

That trio will pose a threat, while the defensive midfield duo of Cheick Souare and Lukas Cerv should stay compact in front of Jan Paluska, Sampson Dweh and Vaclav Jemelka in defence.

Ferencvaros are 6/4 to win this home tie, with Viktoria Plzen the marginal outsiders at 9/5. That gives the Hungarians an implied win probability of 40% for this fixture, while a draw can be backed at 12/5. 

Over 2.5 goals is 4/5, BTTS is 8/13 while Varga is 9/2 to bag the first goal.

This game should feature a decent amount of goals, especially given both teams have scored in four of the last five Viktoria Plzen matches. Meanwhile, Ferencvaros have seen over 2.5 goals be a successful pick in their last eight matches on the bounce. So we should have no trouble seeing both teams find the net in this game - but I am going to back Keane’s side to get the home win. 

Ferencvaros have won three, drawn two and lost once in the league so far, but they performed extremely well in the Champions League qualifiers and were really unlucky to lose 4-3 to Qarabag on aggregate having won the away leg 3-2. They have enough quality to get past Viktoria Plzen, who have won four of their nine league matches this term and lost to Rangers over two legs in their Champions League qualifier. 

Barnabas Varga to score anytime @ 6/4

Ten goals in 12 games this season, including six in six Champions League qualifiers show the class that Varga has in the final third. Keane is clearly a massive fan of his and Ferencvaros are a strong attacking side, as they’ve proved with their recent 15-0 win over Szarvaskend SE in the cup and their 14 goals in six games in the league. 

They should be able to land a blow on Viktoria Plzen as a result, and if they do, it is most likely going to be the Hungarian international Varga, who is seemingly unstoppable right now. He is getting better and better with age and is a decent price to find the net at anytime.
