Ecuador vs Peru Prediction: Valencia to strike first in vital victory for hosts

After a 1-0 defeat to Brazil in Cuiaba last Saturday, Ecuador will be looking to return to winning ways in their South American 2026 World Cup qualification campaign when they host Peru at the Estadio Rodrigo Paz Delgado on Tuesday (22:00, Premier Sports 1).

Team News
Sparta Prague wing-back Angelo Preciado served a one-game suspension for an accumulation of yellow cards on the weekend and is free to return to action on Tuesday.
The 26-year-old is likely to start on the right-hand side, so if head coach Sebastian Beccacece - whose first game in charge ended in defeat last Saturday - decides to stick with a three-man defence and wing-backs, Atletico Mineiro's Alan Franco could tuck back into central midfield to open up space for Preciado, with Sao Paulo's Jhegson Mendez the most likely casualty from the starting XI.
Carlos Gruezo (San Jose Earthquakes) and Kendry Paez (Independiente del Valle) are other strong contenders to be included from the beginning in Quito. Both were brought on at the start of the second half against Brazil for Mendez and Jeremy Sarmiento (Burnley, on loan from Brighton & Hove Albion).
Ecuador captain Enner Valencia (Internacional) hasn't scored in his last five appearances for his country but is expected to lead the line again in pursuit of his 42nd international goal.
Peru are yet to win a 2026 World Cup qualifier, but they picked up a third point of the campaign in a 1-1 draw with Colombia in Lima on Saturday. Head coach Jorge Fossati will have been pleased with his players' efforts, as it took until the 82nd minute for Liverpool winger Luis Diaz to cancel out Alexander Callens' (AEK Athens) 68th-minute opener.
As a result, Fossati could name an unchanged starting XI in the Ecuadorian capital, with Italy-born Gianluca Lapadula (Cagliari) fronting La Blanquirroja's attack again.

Ecuador are 2/5 to claim a fourth win of the campaign, giving La Tri an implied win probability of 71.4%, while Peru are 15/2, or an 11.8% chance, to secure their first competitive victory since February 2022 (2-0 v Paraguay).
The last two meetings between these sides have ended in stalemate and you can back a hat-trick of draws at 11/4.
Valencia (23/20) is the favourite in the anytime scorer market while Lapadula (9/2) is considered Peru's best chance of finding the net in Quito.
Match Result & Total Goals Over/Under 2.5 - Ecuador & Under 2.5 Goals @ 8/5
Peru battled bravely to secure a point against Colombia on Saturday but, away from home, they are likely to find things much trickier.
Tuesday's visitors to the Ecuadorian capital have picked up just a solitary point on their travels so far, holding Paraguay to a goalless draw in Cuidad del Este last September before 2-0 defeats in Chile and Bolivia.
Peru haven't won a competitive away fixture since beating Colombia in Barranquilla in January 2022, and all the signs are that they will face more disappointment tonight.
They haven't scored in any of their three away 2026 World Cup qualifiers and now face an Ecuador side that has conceded just once at home so far. La Tri went behind to an Agustin Cannobio strike against Uruguay last September before coming back to win 2-1, and they subsequently kept clean sheets in a goalless draw with Colombia and a 1-0 victory over Chile.
Only Argentina (two) and Paraguay (three) have conceded fewer goals than Ecuador (four - level with Colombia) across their first seven qualifiers, highlighting the strength of their defence, while Paraguay (one) are the only side to have scored fewer than Peru (two) so far.
A low-scoring Ecuador win looks like the way to go here.
First Scorer - Enner Valencia @ 3/1
Valencia is Ecuador's all-time top scorer with 41 goals, six of them struck at World Cups, but the 34-year-old has endured a difficult few months for club and country, failing to score at the 2024 Copa America - where he was also sent off - or in his first nine appearances of the Serie A season for Internacional.
The former West Ham United and Everton striker was substituted for AVS forward John Mercado in the 68th minute of Saturday's defeat to Brazil, perhaps pointing to the fact that his place in the team is not as secure as it once was.
However, I think it's more likely that Valencia was being conserved for Tuesday's clash against Peru, which will be seen as a must-win.
Mercado has youth on his side but the 24-year-old only made his national team debut this month and is unproven at the elite level, so Valencia should start in Quito, and I'm expecting him to get back on the goalscoring trail.
There's little value to be had in backing Valencia in the anytime scorer market, so as I'm already predicting a low-scoring contest, it makes sense to look to the first scorer market, where Ecuador's main man is priced at 3/1.
His last goal for La Tri, on June 13, was the opening strike in a 3-1 friendly victory over Bolivia.
