Dynamo Kyiv vs Lazio Prediction: Sides may settle for stalemate in Hamburg

A 3-1 aggregate defeat to Red Bull Salzburg last month cost Dynamo Kyiv the chance to play in this season's Champions League, with the Ukrainians having to settle for the Europa League as a consolation prize. The Blue and Whites kick off their League Phase campaign by taking on Lazio at the Volksparkstadion in Hamburg on Wednesday (20:00, TNT Sports 2).

Team News

Volodymyr Shepelev has been out injured since mid-July and will miss out again for Dynamo Kyiv on Wednesday, while there are question marks over the fitness of Mykola Mykhaylenko, Matvii Ponomarenko, Denys Popov and Nazar Voloshyn; Mykhaylenko and Voloshyn missed last Wednesday's 3-1 victory over Vorskla and Saturday's goalless draw with Rukh Lviv, while Ponomarenko and Popov haven't featured since last month.

Former West Ham United winger Andriy Yarmolenko is one of the star names in the Dynamo Kyiv ranks and he will expect to make back-to-back starts in midweek after playing the first 72 minutes at the weekend.

Meanwhile, Panama international Eduardo Guerrero could make his first European appearance for the club after joining from Ukrainian Premier League rivals Zorya at the start of September.

Football Odds

Taty Castellanos only scored four times for Lazio in Serie A last season but is already on three this term, brilliantly filling the void left by Ciro Immobile. However, the Argentine striker limped out of a 2-1 victory over Hellas Verona earlier this month and missed Sunday's 2-1 defeat at Fiorentina, making him a doubt for the midweek trip to Germany.

Fellow forward Boulaye Dia, who scored in his first two starts for the club against Milan and Verona, is also a doubt after suffering an ankle injury in Florence.

Samuel Gigot, meanwhile, is yet to make his Lazio debut after arriving from Olympique Marseille during the summer and could miss out on the squad again on Wednesday.

Matias Vecino, Loum Tchaouna, Nicolo Rovella, Adam Marusic and Pedro are among those hoping to earn promotions to the starting XI.

Dynamo Kyiv are 13/5 to win on Wednesday, which gives the Ukrainian side an implied probability of 27.8%, while Lazio are 21/20 favourites (48.8%) to kick off their Europa League campaign with a victory.

The draw is available at 5/2, both teams to score at 4/6, and over 2.5 total goals at 4/5.

This is a difficult game to call, made harder for Dynamo Kyiv by the fact they have to play their 'home' games away from Ukraine. That should help Lazio, who benefit from making the shorter trip to Hamburg and not having to play at their opponents' stadium.

However, the Italian side could be without both Castellanos and Dia, leaving them short up front. Dia departed Sunday's match in the 68th minute with the score level at 1-1, and Lazio toiled in his absence, eventually losing 2-1.

Marco Baroni should still be confident of his side getting on the scoresheet given they have struck in each of their five games under his tutelage so far, including twice against Milan and Verona, and three times versus Venezia.

Dynamo, meanwhile, are unbeaten in league action this term, and their only defeat in any competition was a 2-0 defeat to Salzburg in Lublin last month - also one of just two matches they have failed to score in. They've drawn three times already this term, two of them 1-1 - including their Champions League play-off second leg against Salzburg - while Lazio's only stalemate of the 2024/25 campaign - versus Milan - saw both teams score.

BTTS - Yes has landed in all five Lazio games, and I'm confident that can happen again here. Adding the draw result boosts the odds to 100/30, and considering Lazio's injury issues, it's a selection that looks good to me; a draw would be a solid enough result for both sides.

Anytime Goal Scorer - Andriy Yarmolenko (DYN) @ 3/1

Yarmolenko was unable to inspire Dynamo past Salzburg in the Champions League play-offs, but the 34-year-old was on target in the previous round against Rangers, netting the only goal of the game in the Ukrainian side's 1-0 victory over the Scots in their 'home' leg in Lublin.

The Ukraine international has only scored once since, the winner in a 1-0 win at home to LNZ Cherkasy at the start of the month, but he's likely to start on Wednesday to provide some experience in attack, and he's not lacking in quality, either.

Yarmolenko scored eight times in 17 league appearances last season and has two in five this term; he'll be looking to roll back the years and add to the 14 he already has in the Europa League (including one in a qualifier).

I think 3/1 is a solid enough price considering he is one of Dynamo's most dangerous attackers and the game is taking place away from Rome and in a neutral location.
