Team News

Denmark's winless record at Euro 2024 resulted in the dismissal of head coach Kasper Hjulmand, with Augsburg assistant coach Lars Knudsen placed in temporary charge. Knudsen has named five uncapped players in his first squad, including Genoa's Morten Frendrup and Rennes' Albert Gronbaek.

Several regulars have been forced to withdraw due to injury, notably defenders Andreas Christensen and Joakim Maehle, and striker Rasmus Hojlund. New Brighton & Hove Albion midfielder Matt O'Riley is also out injured, while Simon Kjaer and Thomas Delaney announced their international retirements following the conclusion of the European Championship.

There is still considerable experience in their ranks, however, with Kasper Schmeichel, Jannik Vestergaard, Joachim Andersen, Christian Eriksen and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg all named in the squad.

Football Odds

Unlike Denmark, Switzerland impressed at the Euros, beating Italy 2-0 in the last 16 and only exiting at the quarter-final stage after a penalty shoot-out defeat to England. Experienced quartet Granit Xhaka, Manuel Akanji, Remo Freuler and Ricardo Rodriguez have been named in this month's squad after impressing in Germany, but Yann Sommer, Fabian Schar and Xherdan Shaqiri all retired after their nation's involvement in the tournament ended.

There are two uncapped players named by Murat Yakin for this month's UNL games against Denmark and Spain - 29-year-old Sturm Graz defender Gregory Wuthrich and 25-year-old Young Boys forward Joel Monteiro.

Denmark are 13/10 favourites to triumph on Thursday, giving them an implied win probability of 43.5%, while Switzerland, who haven't beaten the Red and Whites since their first-ever meeting in 1984, can be backed at 2/1 (33.3%).

The draw is available at 2/1, both teams to score at 5/6, and over 2.5 total goals at 6/5.

Denmark's Kasper Dolberg leads the anytime scorer list at 23/10, followed by teammate Jonas Wind (13/5) and Swiss striker Breel Embolo (11/4).

Correct Score - Draw 1-1 @ 5/1

Denmark and Switzerland have played each other seven times previously, with a 2-4-1 record in favour of Thursday's hosts. They've only faced off twice in the 21st century, however, twice in 2019 and once in March this year, and two of them ended in stalemate.

March's international friendly ended in a goalless draw as the Danes failed to win at Parken for the first time since November 2022, and it was Switzerland's sixth draw in their last eight games.

The Swiss have kept up their penchant for a stalemate, drawing four of their next eight matches in regulation time, and winning the other four. Remarkably, all four of the Nati's draws ended 1-1, including their quarter-final defeat to England at Euro 2024, which saw the Three Lions progress to the semi-finals following a penalty shoot-out.

Denmark, meanwhile, have played seven times since failing to beat Switzerland in Copenhagen, winning three, drawing three, and losing the other. Rather impressively, they managed to advance to the last 16 of Euro 2024 by drawing all three of their group games against Slovenia, England and Serbia, the first two of which ended 1-1. Is it too simple just to back another 1-1 draw on Thursday?

Well, I don't think there is much separating these sides. Switzerland were obviously more impressive during the summer, holding hosts Germany to a 1-1 draw in Frankfurt and beating Italy in the last 16.

However, the Swiss have seen three key players retire, notably Sommer, who was a dependable presence in goal and crucial to how they built up from the back.

Away from home, and having not beaten Denmark for nearly 40 years, the Swiss could find it difficult to prise all three points from the Danes. I do expect them to extend their scoring record to nine games, though, with 1-1 looking like the most sensible scoreline pick.

Denmark vs switzerland correct score - draw 1-1 @ 5-1

Anytime Scorer - Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg @ 13/2

A tricky market considering Denmark's biggest goal threat, Manchester United striker Hojlund, is out injured, while Switzerland are a side that tends to share the strikes around.

So, it might be worth going for a value pick here, and Olympique Marseille loanee Hojbjerg is well worthy of consideration.

The 29-year-old is by no means prolific at club level, registering his highest-scoring season for parent club Tottenham Hotspur in 2022/23, scoring four times in the Premier League and once in the Uefa Champions League.

Meanwhile, Hojbjerg found the net just seven times in his first 74 international appearances for the Danish national team.

However, the former Bayern Munich and Southampton midfielder has been in prolific for his country in 2024, scoring three goals in seven games this year, starting with an early opener in a 2-0 friendly win against the Faroe Islands in March.

Hojbjerg then struck in back-to-back June victories against Sweden (2-1) and Norway (3-1), extending his international scoring record to three matches. He was unable to add to his tally at Euro 2024 but wasn't afraid of trying his luck, averaging 1.8 shots per game in Germany, boosted by a mammoth five shots taken against England.

The 2022 Danish Football of the Year is yet to get off the mark for his new side in France but had two efforts saved in a 2-2 draw with Stade Reims and took two shots in Marseille's most recent outing, a 3-1 victory over Toulouse last Saturday.
