Coventry vs Tottenham Prediction: Spurs have to respond

Coventry City welcome Tottenham Hotspur to the Coventry Building Society Arena on Wednesday (20:00, Sky Sports+) for the third round of the Carabao Cup. The Sky Blues have handled themselves well against Premier League opposition of late but they have won just one of their EFL Championship matches so far in 2024/25.
Spurs will be looking for a response after they were beaten on home soil by bitter rivals Arsenal on Sunday. Read on for my Coventry vs Tottenham prediction, featuring match odds and team news.
Coventry vs Tottenham Betting Tips
Coventry are 6/1, or a 14.3% chance, of winning this tie in 90 minutes. Tottenham are 2/5 to take the victory, giving them an implied probability of 71.4%. If you think the the two sides won't be separated in regulation time, the draw can be backed at 7/2 (22.2%).
Both teams to score is on offer at 8/11 and over 2.5 goals is valued at 8/15. Coventry attacker Haji Wright has two goals in the Championship this term, and he is priced at 11/4 to score in 90 minutes on Wednesday.
Son Heung-min has two for Spurs in the Premier League and he is 23/20 to find the net at any stage during regulation time.
Team News
Coventry have been without key player Ben Sheaf for their start to the campaign and his absence has been a huge miss for Mark Robins' side. The midfielder is fighting to return to action before the end of the month, but he won't be around for this one. Tatsuhiro Sakamoto has been plagued with injuries in 2024 and he is out of action until October at the earliest.
Joel Latibeaudiere is a doubt too after the versatile player was forced off with a knock in the second half of their 1-1 draw with Watford at the weekend.
For Spurs, they are without £60m man Richarlison as he recovers from a muscle injury. Luckily for the visitors, they have another £60m+ player to play up front in Dominic Solanke. Yves Bissouma is a doubt to take part so an opportunity could arise for young Lucas Bergvall to play alongside either Pape Mate Sarr or Rodrigo Bentancur.
If Ange Postecoglou looks for further rotation, we could see both Wilson Odobert and Timo Werner, who made appearances from the bench at the weekend, could be named in the starting XI.
Tottenham and over 2.5 goals @ 19/20
There is arguably nothing worse in football than losing to your biggest rivals on home soil and that is exactly what happened to Spurs on Sunday. They have picked up just four points from as many matches, and if they want to make up for their 'bottling' of finishing in the top four last season, they cannot afford to get left behind this early.
After all, they enjoyed a brilliant start last season. Postecoglou has reiterated the point that he wins silverware in his second season at the various clubs he's been at, so this competition could be a priority for him and his players.
Both these sides need to see drastic improvements soon for their own ambitions. Spurs want to return to the Champions League and want to end their trophy drought, while Coventry aim to be in the promotion picture come May.
I think the Sky Blues can give Spurs a challenge, just like they did against Wolverhampton Wanderers and Manchester United in last year's FA Cup. However, I think Sheaf is a huge miss for them and without him, I don't fancy their chances of pulling off an upset.
Spurs should have enough to get through this tie in 90 minutes but the fans will be wanting to see a convincing attacking performance, not to watch them scrape by.

Dominic Solanke anytime goalscorer @ 1/1
Spurs invested heavily on this man's services over the summer to inject them with the goals needed to get them where they want to be. Solanke had an excellent season with Bournemouth in 2023/24, netting 19 goals in the Premier League, and now he needs to show he can do it in a team who are striving for more.
He is yet to get off the mark in Spurs' colours in the two matches he's played so far. He's had a handful of chances already and there were one ore two he should've really scored against Leicester City in their league opener, and he was unfortunate not to see a header creep in against Arsenal on Sunday.
A game against Championship opposition presents him with a chance to open his account and give him some confidence. He will be aware that things aren't clicking for Coventry just yet and that should play into his hands. I'm backing Solanke to score his first Tottenham goal in this clash.
