Strasbourg to win

Strasbourg can count themselves lucky to still be in the tie heading back to Stade de la Meinau on Thursday, with a one-goal deficit one that they could well overturn. I do like this Rayo Vallecano outfit, but ultimately, the contrast between their home and away form cannot be ignored.

Rayo have lost second-leg fixtures in each of their last two knockout rounds, to Samsunspor and AEK Athens and Strasbourg are better than both of those sides. Added to that, of their 12 La Liga losses, 10 have come on the road and they have lost three out of their last four away matches. 

Strasbourg meanwhile have won three of their five home matches in the Conference League, and produced a stunning 4-0 comeback victory over Mainz, having lost 2-0 in Germany. Their form is poor, having lost five of seven, but all their focus is on this game and I think they can win on Thursday, and force the game to extra-time. 

Becket Godo to score

Becket Fabrice-Martial Godo has been in fine fettle this season, scoring 14 goals in total from the wing. He’s got four goals in the Conference League this term and it does feel as though he will be the man to spark a comeback for the hosts. I can’t see the visitors keeping a clean sheet, so let’s throw Godo into the mix.

Julio Enciso 1+ shot on target

We can expect Julio Enciso to come back into the Strasbourg XI and he’s good for a shot, having averaged exactly one per 90 in Ligue 1 this season. The former Brighton man also averages 2.66 total shots per 90 and isn’t shy in front of goal, so I think we can expect him to get one on target - given the hosts will be pushing to get back in this tie from the off.

Over 1+ cards for Rayo Vallecano

The Spaniards are going to have to indulge in the dirty side of this game, if they are going to progress, and so I’d expect several cards for the away side. They’ve been the dirtiest team in La Liga this season, amassing 91 yellow cards and a remarkable nine red cards over the league campaign. 

They are going to get stuck in here, and I’m happy to back them to get at least one card.
