Wrexham racecourse

There’s two newly-promoted League 1 teams that are the talk of the town as we head into the new Championship season, and Wrexham have caused quite a stir over the last few seasons. Back-to-back-to-back promotions under Phil Parkinson since Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac took ownership of the club is a remarkable achievement, and now they find themselves fighting with the big boys.

The Premier League dream is on the cards, and below you can find my Wrexham Championship Odds along with a season preview.

Prediction: 12th

Despite having a huge amount of credit in the bank at Wrexham, there is still a fair amount of concern regarding Parkinson in the Championship. His style of football is direct, and he struggled at the likes of Sunderland before rocking up in Wales.

I’m actually slightly more positive on Parky than others, but it will be interesting to see how he gets this array of new signings, all on decent money, to gel at the Racecourse Ground this term. The momentum this club has built up is immense, but the rapid rise may lead to some difficult moments this term.

Their ownership and worldwide fame means that they are able to spend big and attract some major names, but the squad churn although necessary could cause issues - so let’s take a look at their transfer business.

Transfer business

In: Lewis O’Brien (£3m), Kieffer Moore (£2m), Conor Coady (£2m), Liberato Cacace (£2m), George Thomason (£1.2m), Ryan Hardie (£750k), Danny Ward and Josh Windass (free).

Out: Luke Bolton, Will Boyle, Luke McNicholas (all undisclosed), Mark Howard, Sam Dalby, Bradley Foster, Josh Adam (all free), Paul Mullin (loan).

What a summer signing it has been so far for Wrexham on paper. They’ve brought in a couple of Welsh players in the form of Danny Ward and Kieffer Moore, while Nathan Broadhead continues to be linked. Moore is a cracking signing who brings great experience, having helped Sheffield United to 92 points on the pitch last term.

Lewis O’Brien is a cracking midfield addition while Conor Coady brings yet more experience to the defence. Ryan Hardie is a proven goalscorer at this level but Wrexham may have an issue when it comes to getting forwards on the pitch. Moore and Hardie join Jay Rodriguez, Ollie Palmer, Jack Marriott and Sam Smith as central strikers, while if Broadhead joins as well, Parkinson could have an issue getting them all minutes.

Paul Mullin leaves the club on loan as the Championship seems too high a level for him, but this squad is just getting stronger and stronger.

Key Player: Arthur Okonkwo

I really hope the arrival of Ward doesn’t mean Arthur Okonkwo is cast to one side. The young goalkeeper has been absolutely sensational since joining the club initially on loan from Arsenal in 2023/24. That promotion from League 2 saw Wrexham make the move permanent last summer, and he looked right at home in League 1, as the Welsh side finished second behind Birmingham City.

I don’t usually pick out goalkeepers as key players, especially with all the attacking signings Wrexham have made, but if they are to have a successful season they will have to rely heavily on the 23-year-old. Wrexham only conceded 34 goals in 46 league games last term, while Okonkwo missed a bit of the season with a wrist fracture, but only let in 23 in his 33 appearances.

Nineteen clean sheets along the way give me full belief that he can play in the Premier League one day, but the Championship will see him put under more pressure than ever before. I think Okonkwo will step up to the plate.

Championship Outrights 2025-2026 - Promotion Wrexham

Prediction: 12th

A safe but sensible prediction. I started the summer with Wrexham somewhere near the relegation zone, but with every new arrival they have climbed up the table. They still have some work to do to challenge for the play-off places, and I think that will be a step too far, but there is no reason why Ryan and Rob can’t lead this side into the Premier League in the next few years.

Ultimately, money is a major factor in this division, and Wrexham have a lot of it. The signings they have made have plenty of experience, and I think Josh Windass could prove to be a brilliant pick-up on a free. Ultimately, all of the new signings could see them start slowly, while Parkinson also has a point to prove in the second tier, especially if he comes under early pressure.

Football Odds

12th would be a remarkable continuation of the rapid progress we have seen in the last four years - and how's this for a wild prediction - Danny Rohl becomes the new Wrexham manager at some point this season.
